Which arms race? There's been more than one. The SOVIET arms race is over, but Bush is about to start a new arms race with the younger nuclear powers of the world such as China, Pakistan, North Korea (if you believe their claims) and India, to name a few.

^^No, I am not mistaken it is conventional and not nuclear

The Guided Bomb Unit-28 (GBU-28) is a special weapon developed for penetrating hardened Iraqi command centers located deep underground. The GBU-28 is a 5,000-pound laser-guided conventional munition that uses a 4,400-pound penetrating warhead. The bombs are modified Army artillery tubes, weigh 4,637 pounds, and contain 630 pounds of high explosives. They are fitted with GBU-27 LGB kits, 14.5 inches in diameter and almost 19 feet long. The operator illuminates a target with a laser designator and then the munition guides to a spot of laser energy reflected from the target.

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/smart/gbu-28.htm

And the problem with the 'arms race' that was forementioned is that it is one sided, our last weapon nuclear test was in the 90's, not last week. Our focus has been on smart bombs rather then nukes.

I'm not sure but I don't think we're talking about the same weapon. Clarify something for me. I think the weapons you are talking about are already in use(Non-Nuclear). But the ones I'm talking about are the ones Bush wants to start building. (Which are Nuclear)

nevermind the kinda weapon! we (the free countries) just have to have more destructive weapons than them (communists, muslims, ...)!!!

Thanks tips.

yes, I am talking about the conventunal ones that were used in Iraq, you are talking about the nuclear ones that are not even off the drawing board that no one has heard of. But, it is still not an arms race. They are tactical and not used for wide spread destruction like those being developed by other nations. Indians have the nuke so they can kill the Pakistanis and the Pakistanis have the nuke so they can kill the Indians, none of these weapons are aimed at us. Also, with the exception of China, none of those nations have ICBMs which takes them out of our leauge. And we are not about to go to war with China, and even if we do we will not utilize nukes over the freedom of Taiwan. Right now the so called arms race is non-existant and not at all an issue.

Driving that Train

nuclear weapons are not a problem if you do not have good missiles or airplanes to throw it! look the paki's air force!!! hahahahahha!! so funny!

^Alright, now that we're on the same page. I would definately disagree that the nuclear bunker busters aren't even 'off the drawing board.' The U.S. military has R&D out the ying yang and probably have developed stuff we think isn't even possible yet. I think they are just waiting for government approval before they start mass producing them.

But our reserves are enough to destroy the world anyway. And as people have so helpfully pointed out, we have the most powerful army in the world in case we can't hit targets with nukes. So who exactly are we defending ourselves against?

You just proved my point. Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile. They've been around for a long time. You don't need planes to launch nukes just silos. You must never have heard of the Cuban missile crisis.

^^Yet, it still hasn't been tested due to the 1994 nuclear test band treaty, so yes, this is on the drawing board, at least the nuclear aspect of the weapon

Driving that Train

It may not have been 'tested' but honestly do you think the US military needs to test something like this? They've been building nukes for half a century.

yes, because when you are dealing with something so powerful it must be tested, did you even read your own artical, one of the goals of the weapon is that it has no fall out, I think that would require testing.

Driving that Train

hey but if it has no fall out then you can test it all you want.....

Fair enough. But with the Bush administration's track record with treaties we'll see how things develop.

they need to test it and tweak it so there is no fall out, this is shit that you can just play around with and not test

Driving that Train

well, dangerous countries do not have these ICBM and know they 'd destroyed even before this missile 'd be in the air! well, i think nuclear stuffs are over. what do you need to make a missile goin' where you want? electronic. masterize it, and no one can hurt you.

morover, nuclear will never be used again (to me), coz' usin' it one time means total destruction. everybody prefers a good clean face to face fight! ask japan!

Do you honestly think a wimpy international treaty that is so CONTRARY to the American way of life is going to stop the Greatest Nation in the World from testing its nukes?

a treaty is just a contract. if the most powerful country in the world decides not to aplly it, what happens? ... euh, nothing!

Oh, and nuclear weapons are not the american way of life, no one has seen one set off in 10 years and one has not been used in combat in 60 years, I think someone has been watching to much Dr. Strangelove.

Hey, if THE FREEDOM AND SAFETY OF THIS GREAT COUNTRY is at stake, do you honestly think a little treaty will stop us, whether or not we have abided by it in the past?

In just the past week, his administration:

Abandoned a United Nations draft accord that sets out ways to enforce the 1995 Biological Weapons Convention.

Became the lone holdout as 178 other nations agreed to implement the 1997 Kyoto treaty to combat global warming.

Forced changes in a U.N. pact to stem the illegal flow of small arms, from handguns to shoulder-launched rockets. U.S. officials signed on only after blocking two key provisions that would have restricted arms owned by civilians and sold to rebels.

Yes, we were a hold out on the Kyoto protical because it is ludicrist, but we did not sign it and then violate it. We did sign the test ban treaty. Violated a draft, that is something that is just being drawn up and is not even a treaty yet. Sorry

Driving that Train

Another treaty Bush is reviewing, and is expected to reject, is the 1997 Land Mine Ban Treaty. But I won't get ahead of myself and assume anything.

The reason we are reviewing the land mine treaty is that there are several million land mines in the demiliterized zone between north and south Korea. Those mines are protecting S. Korea from the communist north.

Driving that Train

yes, but everybody knows why the kyoto protocol was rejected: no envirronmental concerns, only a way to affect american economy!

Kyoto would cost billions and billions to implement and the time period it would take to be in full effect would be self defeating. Sorry, but I am going to smoke so we can continue this at an other time if you wish

Driving that Train

You've got to be kidding. There is no way land mines are the only thing holding the raging commies from overrunning the south.

we do not know how much men act on environment! so, maybe things are just cyclic! and if not, all these problems with nukes, and so one are just stuff to scare people! life your life, and let next generation care! ;)

i dont care about the landmines, but yes the kyoto treaty would have costs, thats the idea. economics place the environment as an externality, just a misfiting piece of the equation. the whol eqatino is flawed and the only way to fix it is to tax the crap out of certain industries. while a corportation is an individual, legal entity, its one that often really has no soul. while they say they do, the only real concern is stock price and profit margins. so its the only way to control them. and fuck, weve already spent plenty of federal funds on iraq... which seriously isnt getting us much in return.
