Let's end all ski competitions/rail jams today

Everyday i hear/see (on the hill /on newschoolers) that skiing is about the fun, and going out with your friends, and shredding park/mountain is all you need for a satisfactory day. Shane Mcconkey, Arne Backstrom, JP Auclair, Sarah Burke (Who did compete but still had a care free attitude)etc. (among others) have possessed this attitude, and I hear 100% of skiiers advocate it. At party's I always hear "Fuck sponsors, it's all about the fun" Who doesn't bullshit and say its about the fun though?

If skiing is all about this, then why do we have hundreds of barbaric contests going on? Alpha vs beta compettions are going on, and it is degrading. After moving to a ski town for the first time in my life i have experienced it. Total dicks who are good at riding rule the town, and can harass new athletes because they suck. Typical responses in non-skiing arguments are "So can you throw a switch nine or are you a fucking pussy?" In social situations off the hill when tensions arises, an almost fraternity (because there are no girls in ski towns) attitude becomes involved and it sickens me. Are we using skiing to solve ethical arguments now? Sounds good.

Look at your peers, and ask yourself if you appreciate the direction our sport is going. I am weary. Opinions.

i kind of agree with the over all idea that skiing should be all about fun... but comps are really fun, its fun to push your self and comps help you to do that.

plus... with out competition skiing how will pros get money and how would the industry do w/o comps?
 
Yeah fuck all the hate that is going on. I want to get better at the park but every time I fall on a box I feel like a shit head.
 
I 100% agree that skiing is about having fun but I also think that comps are. Really fun and help people progress.... I feel like if people are starting fights about it its because that individual is an asshole and its not because we have ski comps

the dicks will still be dicks even if there are no comps.

Im not sure how railjams are in bigger ski areas, but all the ones I have been to are all a bunch of stoked kids pushing themselves and having fun.
 
bro. comps arent for everyone. if you dont like competing, then just go skiing with your friends. if your friends like competing, then just watch and cheer them on!

I personally like competing, because it pushes me to go bigger, hit harder features, and try new tricks. Do i let it get to me when i suck ass compared to my buddies who can throw switch cork 9s? no. i just have fun and progress at my own rate.

plus, watch some xgames runs on tv, they are genuinely entertaining. its cool to watch the best skiers in the world throw down some of the gnarliest tricks ever.

finally, if comps didnt exist, what the fuck would we have to bitch about on NS? this is one of the most entertaining parts of this forum. isnt it fun to worship tom wallisch? and whine about how skiing is becoming aerials?

think hard about what you are asking. competitions bring more than just money and fame to skiing. They serve a really great purpose: to push the sport to new heights, and give "core" skiers something to rebel against.
 
hey man if you dont wanna compeat or deal withthe parkrats and there gangster ways just rip through the park like i do and do straight slide on all boxes and back flips of all jumps. like a boss
 
if skiing is about fun and some people have fun in comps let them do comps. just cuz u dont wanna do comps doesnt mean u have to make a stupid excuse. im usually the same with filming but when i flim its more fun... try a comp try a rail jam thr more exciting than u would think
 
why can't competition be fun? all of us love stepts skate series so what's so different about any other comp? the only thing that needs reform is judging
