i am interseted in buying an slr. but i have read that buying a kit isnt that great to start off with. I am getting a canon elan 7. Can anyone tell me what time of lense to get.

 
buy a SLR, much more fun and you learn alot more about the media if you are constantly interacting with it to make your pic. I don't what an Elan 7 is though so maybe I should shut up!

An Elan 7 is a SLR. If you plan on using it to shoot pretty much every day stuff I would go with a 50mm, 1.8 at first. The quality of the picture is about as good as you get from a $5000 dollar tele lens but for under a hundred bucks. Its the best way to get to know the camera. A 50 is considered a normal lens cause the size you see is the size it appears. The lenses they sell in kits, generally now they are like a 28-80 (canon is 90mm I think) seems like a good lens. But its pretty bad optically and 28 is not very wide and 90 is hardly zoomed in. So once you get to know the functions of the camera go with a wide angle, something 24 or less if you can afford it then a zoom of like 70-200 or so. Do NOT buy a 28-200, or 28-300 zoom...the camera store will probably want to sell you one. They are so weak when not in a small range they totally defeat the purpose of a decent camera. The only good super range zoom is the canon 35-350 but that is like $2500 bucks and is huge so I doubt that is in the budget. Get a backpack too nothing dumber than having $500+ in a 10 dollar bag wrapped in a shirt, easiest way to break everything.

thanks, i am actually getting a pelican waterproof case, so i can take it on the water during the summers and not worry about getting wet in a bag, and its a hard case so i can just put it in my backpack. I think the 50 1.8 is the lense ill start of with.
