Legit still camera

cannon rebel XT or XTI

both completely legitimate and rugged as balls

you should be able to get the XT and a decent Tamron lense for about 500

the cannon rebels are for sure the way to go...

^ yep, the canon rebel line for sure! just don't buy crappy lenses, you'll end up buying original ones and you'll just spend more skrilla. stick to canon shit.

for your budget i'd say the xti, although for a few extra bills you could get the xsi which is much nicer (same camera just a newer version). i got mine a few months ago and couldn't be happier

the XSI is the same interface with SIGNIFICANT upgrades

if and XSI is on the radar

then definitely go for it

if it's too much

the XTI or XT will do just fine

depends on what you want it for, but if you want something basic just get a kit lense (18-55mm IS lense for a canon XTI or XSI body). oh an IS stands for image stabilizer or something but it isn't really necessary so you could get a non IS lense too if you wanna keep under budget.

if you dont want the responsibility of carring around an SLR all day while you ski check this sony out

SONY DSC-W80

it takes more photos per second than the rebel

it has just as many mega pixels

it fits in any pocket on your jacket

i used to have a canon rebel now i have a pentax k10 the pentax is dope, its burly, and its all sealed up from the elements, unlike the rebel, which is really light and flimsy for a nice camera, i dropped my rebel from like 2 fee tand the case cracked in like 3 places

dude how many people spending 500 dollars on a camera know what/will use all of the features of a more expensive camera....not many.

since 2000 when i had the rebel film camera, i have just used the 18-55mm lens and have taken some amazing photos with it. quit being such a gear snob

I have a D80 and i love it to death.

it came with two lenses 200-80 and 60-15 wide angle.

its sick, takes a beating, pictures are always good, and the battery lasts like a week. The new D90 just came out so i would be willing to bet you can get a pretty good deal on em now.

and just a hint

you can buy a camera at costco, try it out, and if it breaks or you dont like it within a year, you can return it with the recept ;D

get my drift?

definitly go for the d40 or if you can afford it the d60. I bought a d60 over the summer and i definitly do not regret it. after using my uncle's rebel xt for a few times and i definitly like my d60 much better. more compact and takes just as amazing if not better pictures, plus i like the interface better, except for teh 3 af points as opposed to 9.

The 18-55 really isn't a very good lens, even at that price range you can do a lot better. For cheap glass you can't beat the 50mm 1.8--I have been using mine probably 5x as much as my other lenses lately. You can take good pictures with any lens, but they can be great when you're looking through a nice piece of glass.
