Legally use music in a video?

yeah, if you are selling it, then you need permission...you'd have to contact the band, the label or whoever owns the rights to the song, sometimes all of them. Like if you wanted to use a Beatles song, Michael Jackson owns most of them, so you might want to give his people a call...maybe. But if you are using it for anything else, even is if is a sales tool, as long as it isn't being sold itself, you can use any music for free.

 
i have been told you only have to pay if your gona make money off of it, so if you spend $100 making the video and are only gona make $100 or less back then you can use it for free. this is just what i have been told.

if your making money you need to buy rights to do so (extremly expensive) even if you arnt you need permission to use it. i know this from using music on our school anouncments

heres what i know from the best of my knowledge

if you are using music for a NON-SALES medium, but it is a large scale PROMITIONAL video (not like a sponsor vid) then you need to licence it

if your selling it to kids at your mtn, dont worry, they wont find you

if you are distributing it for large scale sales, you need both the RIGHTS LICENCE and a SYNC LICENCE...the RIGHTS LICENCE allows you to legally use the song, the SYNC license is for you to SYNC the clips to the music...in a ski film where the video is correlated to the song, you need to purchase a SYNC licence, because the music drives the video...pretty gay and very expensive
