Leaving your car idling while fueling up

All the signs at the pumps say not to leave your car on while fueling up but what are the actual dangers of doing this? I see people do it all the time and when its -15 fahrenheit it sucks to turn the engine off .
 
Not a big chance at all really, like using your cell phone or filling a gas can while it's sitting in the back of the truck. All slight chances, on the other hand it is a chance that you car/the gas station could blow up so I don't like to take chances.

 
that didnt happen because of her cell phone. it was the static electricity from getting in and out of the car without every touching the door to discharge. that also has nothing to do with leaving your car running while fueling up. I personally dont like to leave it running while fueling up but I also run a very different fuel pump and check value setup for offroading.
 
That's not from the cell phone. It's from the static spark from her hand to the metal. When the car is fueling the air around the nozzle is filled with fumes, and when she got into the car she built up a charge. It's not possible to do that with a cell phone, I don't think I even saw a phone come to think of it....
 
Beat me to it! With things going on in your phone constantly gas stations would be blowing up left and right if that were true.
 
Whatever, I just grabbed that one cause it was the first one I found.

My POINT was anything that can cause a spark can be potentially dangerous while fueling. Static, cars, or who knows maybe cell phones.

I forgot I was on a site full of bonified video and photo analysts ;)
 
Haha, still a cool video none the less. I saw one just like it, but the guys jacket caught fire and he was seriously fucked up afterwards.
 
cell phones can't cause fires at gas stations, myth busters said so.

I always turn my car off, I'm sure it's safer.

 
seems think its a good idea to shut it off. and i dont think i ever see people leaving it on. sounds sketch.
 
Dont worry about leaving your car running during refuiling it wont hurt anything. Even if the car hapens to test for an emissions leak at that moment it will obvously fail. It wont set a code unless it fails twice in a row.
