ok Newschoolers, i got inspired by a leather craftsman i saw making sweet belt designs so i got myself a blank belt and some scrap pieces of leather to get started

i only know the very basics of leather working, cutting in a design, making the piece wet, then embossing it with tools, so far i've only got a scalpel cutting knife and a pointy leather stamping tool and a flathead screwdriver for making my designs, is there anyone out there who's got some experience with it and can get me started a little better ?

or if you have suggestions for simple designs, post em up !

they must fit on a leather belt without having being too detailed, and preferably have something to do with mountains/skiing !

already got a mountain with snow that worked out pretty ok :)

any helpful comment will be appreciated and rewarded with e-cookies !

I know nothing at all about leatherworking. But a sick mountain range would be pretty boss. Make sure to post pics when you're done!

Staining it could look cool. So the parts that are stamped in are darker. I've done it before but i dont remeber how.

i've been practicing a bit on a scrap piece and i'm quite glad with the result so far, i'm not very artsy so this went better than expected, the writing needs more refining, perhaps gonna try calligraphy instead of block letters, also gonna try tanning the leather and see what it gives :)

I would recomend designing it on paper first, then transfering that drawing onto the leather so you have some guidlines. Yours is a little all over the place at the moment. Maybe even design it in photoshop so yo can get some cool fonts, print onto tracing paper, stick that to the leather and work off that. Good luck with it seems like a cool idea if you can get good at it.

this one's all over the place because it's on a piece of scrap leather and it was just a test, when i start for real im going to do paper transfering of the designs, just like you said, or at least draw em onto the leather before beginning the cut...

little update ...

i've started on the actual belt, so far it looks splendid :)

now i'm kind of unsure of what else i should add...

maybe a canadian maple leaf since its my dream to go to canada

or a snowcat , helicopter

i also want to do something aquatic themed since my second passion besides mountains is scuba diving, so i think i'm gonna work an octoland octopus in there somewhere ....
