Laptops for college

i got a mac and i loved it

but if you have any classes that need software, you might need a PC. i have had that issue with two of my courses.

but other than that.. macbook FTW

well tell us what your going to be majoring in/what courses your taking. if your going to business school then get a pc. if your going to art school get a mac. just inform us please

sorry i didnt mean to steal your icon.. but im going to grand valley state university and im thinking about studying to be a physicians assistant

you could get a pretty killer laptop for 1/3 that, and have more left over for fun shit. $1800 is needless unless you're doing super specialized shit.

ehh not really for laptops. They tend to get expensive. Just get a desktop or at least look into having one. My brother got a lap top for his freshman year, within the first semester he gave that up and built his own pc desktop for around 1600. Thing was baaalin

no offense, but that's not the best advice. I'm a junior at the University of Colorado-Boulder. I'm a business major, more particularly in finance and I have a macbook. I use excel heavily, as well as microsoft office. I used to have a PC and my Macbook runs Microsoft office better than a PC did. Additionally it's easier to use, better battery life, WAY more reliable.

macbook ftw. not even a question, get a macbook and thank us later.

if you are gonna be doing any video or photo stuff get a mac. they kick ass and rarely get viruses because people usually write them for pcs instead

Go to the HP website and custom build one. I have a dope lappy for under $1k it's a 15.4 with dual processor blah blah blah.

If you like video games then PC for sure. Macs have a slick UI (user interface), but I sometimes have classes that are half internet and the mac kids run into problems.

I do like the macbook air though. If you're skating around campus it's just easier to have a small/light portable laptop rather than those laptops that double for desktops.

Hope that helps.

...D

no.

a macbook is more user friendly while a pc is better for just office work. and safari and all that jazz is just retarded...and you have to use all those like keyboard code thingys instead of just using the mouse...its like ctr+p and the right click+paste... using the mouse is way easier in the long run. not as complicated. i have used a pc my whole life and have had no problems with any program or anythingwhatsoever. just dont get a crappy pc, but if you are looking for inexpensive...then go to macbook.

I have both an imac and PC at home, but am getting a sony vaio for next year. I love my mac, but wont spend $2000 on a pro, and don't like the 13" screen on the regular macbook, and I refuse to even consider the air.

I'm more of a PC person (I use windows XP and a shitty dell laptop) but in all honesty I would rather get a mac for college. Just easier to use, smaller in general, and so sick for media.

Yeah I have seen that to. Pretty amazing considering apple was pretty much dead 15 years ago. and yeah you can't really go wrong with a macbook.

if i may state an obvious point......you say you have, "used a pc my whole life." if that's true, then how can you say anything bad about a mac without truly owning one and using it all the time?

the same keyboard commands apply to mac, such as copy (cntrl c, is just command c on mac) or paste (control v, is just command v on mac). same with undo, and cut. and with the right mouse click....all it is is pressing control and clicking on a mac. if that's too much effort, well then i don't understand but fair enough.

why is safari retarded btw? If you like internet explorer, or firefox on your PC, then what's the difference with safari? It has all the same functions, it has tabs if you like that, it has a bookmarks bar if you're a fan of that feature. and PCs are not better for office work, perhaps in the past they were, and currently they are still used in the majority of offices for work but that trend will most likely be changing sometime on the sooner side.

unless you've had both a PC and a Mac your input isn't super helpful when you make comments saying one is better.

My parents Mac frustrates the shit out of me. Stuff that takes me 2 seconds on my PC takes me 5 minutes on the Mac trying to figure out that stupid DOS system. But then again Vista ain't great either, I still like using XP.

im thinking that the middle macbook would be best becuase it has:
  • 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 2GB memory
  • 160GB hard drive1
  • Double-layer SuperDrive

Ships: Within 24 hours

Free Shipping

$1,199.00

and the only difference on the next macbook up is 250GB of hard drive for $200 dollars more

For the love of god dont waste your money on a macbook. It is more money for inferior hardware period.

Then again if you buy a mac book you can go down and have little "study" sessions with your cute little overpriced matching laptops and troll facebook together~

wow you must've had a piece of shit pc if it had worse battery life and didn't run office well. I have a HP with the bigger battery and it owns any other laptop for battery life. and well obviously it runs office well your pc must have sucked cock. Macs are dope too, but if you just want to run shit like office you can get way more pc for the money. fucking tits.

this one.

you can even make it super steezy like me if you so desire.

Sure you can run windows on a mac, but if you don't really use the Mac's OS software, why spend way more for it?

Unless you wanna play games or do heavy editing/rendering on your laptop, you can get a laptop for college for under a grand easy. All you need is a Dual Core processor (everything has one now anyways), 2+GB of ram, and a 150+GB harddrive. That will allow you to browse the web, run Microsoft office (word, powerpoint, etc), download music and movies, and run messenging programs. Get windows XP instead of vista too :P

Unless your going into some feild that requires you have specialize software, you're wasting you money spending anything more on a laptop.

they are just all confusing like the way they are setup. i use mac everyday at school so im pretty sure that i know differences and stuff. whatever... internet arguement are so last year.

i would also use the laptop for editing some season edits and stuff like that... ive never really used a mac too much before but if anyone else has edited with one is it better/worse than a pc?

It really makes no difference~

also you dont need 2 gigs of ram if you run xp or another old OS, all of the new OS' are so focused on other shit that any kind of program efficiency gets chucked out the window~

XP might not need 2gb of ram but some of the new software programs designed to run on XP might be able to take advantage of that.

2GB is cheap these days...under 100 bucks easy. Don't cheap out on RAM...

I'd just use a school computer for the software if its not available for Mac. I read a digg article about how apple is going to have a huge rebate offer comming up for students, specifically on the macbook line, they may even update it. The key is you have to send in the rebate to get some money back.

i didnt read everything but i saw many people said get a macbook... i disgree with this. I am persoanlly a mac lover and i say stick with a mac based computer but personally i think the macbooks are lame. they arent all that fantastic. i would look into getting an imac the 24 inch... yah it may not be a laptop but is almost as versatile as a laptop. my buddy has one and used to bring it to class back when i was in school. (graphic design class that is). i have a macbook pro the 17 inch one which is amazing. if you can id say step it up and get a 15 inch macbook pro if you have to get a laptop. if not get the imac 24 inch ($1799). laptop is not all that necessary at college. the only time a laptop has been handy for me when i was in college was when i wanted to go to the library to do work or bring it to my Graphic Design classes cause id rather work with my comp then the schools comps. so yah stick with the mac but deicde how much u truly need a laptop.
