Laptops for College

I got a Gateway with an Intel Centrino Duo with 1.8 Ghz (I think), which RAAAAPES on notebooks. Its got 2 gigs of ram and 120 gig HD. 15.4 inch widescreen. DVD RW and all that.

What did or are you getting?

i think im gonna go with a really sick laptop when i go to college in another year or so, but it has to be uber cause ill play games when im bored..heres one i was thinkin about:

15.4 widescreen

250 gig HD

2.8 ghz processor

1 gig(at least) of ram

and a nice graphics card thats at least 256 mb, preferably Nvidia
 
I dont know about all you mac users. Sure they are sleek looking. but their is not one thing that a mac can do that a PC cant. their are many things that PCs can do that macs cant. sure they work great for video editing and all that, but really if you are doing anything more than post production i would get a PC.

Macs are like VWs they are sleek and cool looking, but they make their build their computer in a way that only they know how to fix it when they break. thats how they make $. any techy can fix a PC.
 
the only thing pc's have over macs are their game selection. But if that really bothers you, you can just boot into windows using boot camp. Mac's have plenty of advantages, no viruses, spyware, never crashes, etc.

2.8 Ghz is a lot of processes. you should get a DUO Core, i did and it rapes. they have 2mb of cache and to cores which essentially doubles your operating speed and clock time. my processor is only 1.8 Ghz but its faster than any standard 2.8 Ghz processor(mine operates at the equivalent of a 3.2 Ghz processor with 1 mb of cache). with more efficiency b/c h. i could go on explaining how this works to you but i really dont feel like it.

seeing as my macbook can run windows, there is nothing a pc can do that my macbook cant.

just try using a mac for a week and then tell me that you would rather have a windows pc. i thought those same exact thoughts before i tried using my friends mac. using windows is so goddamn frustrating now.

and the thing about macs is that they are like VW's, they simply dont break down in the first place. a mac lasts about 4 years longer than a pc on average for that reason among others.

the difference between macs and windows pcs can be summed up in one word. efficiency.
 
word. Theres so many things you can do to help your workflow. Automator is crazy. Right now I have it so it automatically sends all my torrent files to my torrent folder, which is then automatically added to my torrent program. And I have it that when I connect my camera it automatically makes copies of all my pictures and resizes them to 640 x 480 and puts them in their own folder, perfect for uploading to websites.
 
this is true. now that macs have intel based processors they are essentially PCs. however, i have used many macs in my day and i would NEVER EVER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE buy a mac. they are over priced and over hiped. i dont like the user interface. the one button mouse pisses me off.

sure i will admit it i bought this computer yesterday, and i still have SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much shit to do to it to make it ideal for my uses. but once i do it will outperform any mac in the areas that i need it to period.

ppl like macs b/c once you take them out of the box they are ready to do everything basic computer users need them to do. ppl dislike PCs b/c they come with programs like mcafee (worst program ever). by the way if any of you PC users need good virus protection go to nod32.com (best anti virus ever). oh ya and AOL can lick my left hairy testicle.

simply put when a PC is using the right software it will outperform a similar mac.

 
oh ya and macs cant use utorrent unless you are running under windows. suckers. but for real if you are a real techy you use usenet or some other network that is not the internet.
 
If you really need a laptop for college, get a mac. If you want a computer at college, you probably wont actually use your laptop anywhere but in your room. if you have the room, go get yourself a desktop, it'll be cheaper, easier to upgrade and perform better given your price range. I have a laptop that I bought for college, and now I'm seriously wishing I'd done a desktop.
 
Thats what I thought too during my first semester. Then I started taking it to class and now I couldn't imagine not having a laptop. I can type soooooooooo much faster than I can write plus I always took my laptop with me to the library to study. I would reccoment a second monitor for your desk though and a dock if you have a laptop thats dock compatible.

Someone name something a PC can do that a mac can't. Something other than saying a specific program.

fuck ya man, i just got my macbook(through school it was free :) ) and the thing is fuckin awesome. im pretty sure that thing and my imac that i just bought ( not knowing i was getting the lap top) is gonna kick ass. pcs are junk my family has had macs my whole life but my brother decided to get a pc built up and the thing ended up crashing on him twice and he had to do a whole semesters worth of work in about 2 weeks, pretty shitty.

i guess he coulda backed it up but what was done was done haha i just realized hes a dumbass
 
Ok first of all how about those exploding batteries these days? that sounds really fun. and second, you've quite clearly never owned a VW. And mac will never compeltely take over because business will be using PCs for a long time. macs are too goofy and expensive for someone who needs a functional machine to work on. I got the centrino duo processor and whatnot, my laptop cost 1 grand was has the hardware of a 2 grand mac... AND it doesn't burst into flames.

Do you actually think that ONE torrent client would stop mac users from using bit torrent? Silly man, ye who knows nothing of macs and pcs. I've been an avid pc user for about 4 years now, I would never go back.
 
^what do macs do better, especially that makes them worth so much more. but even if they were the same price, what do you do on your mac that you wouldn't be able to do on a pc? and dont just name their random time-squandering things like garage band and shit that are for people who dont have anything better to do but sit around on their comp all day.
 
for the people who say macs have no viruses and are harder to hack into some guy totally fucked one in like 20 mins from scratch
 
Oh yeah, that's why most businesses in the US use PC's. Macs are just soooo much better than any other computer. Honestly, Mac's are good for editing, entertainment, and stuff like that, but for school, business, etc. purposes PC is hands down your best bet. Reliability is basically the same too. The only reason "hackers" don't go after Macs as much is because there is a lot less Macs than PC's.
 
macs really aren't better at anything. they have less viruses and spyware, but thats just because they are a small percentage of computers. FCP = Premiere basically, and photoshop runs better on PCs.  Pretty much, the only difference is the OS is way nicer to use.
 
well honestly..

if you looked at the time you spent working compared to entertainment, i bet its usage is in favor of entertainment

PCs are just too much cheaper than macs to ever justify buying an apple.

well I knew that, but all the macs in that batch are fucked, Dell is just a small portion of all the PCs, and dell has never had a very good rep for reliability and overheating and shit that's why I got an hp. And yea we already know that macs are awesome for people who wanna spend mad money on somethin to play around with. For all the rich ass 14 year olds on here that use their computers for ski websites and porn and their parents pay for them macs are ideal.
 
Actually I own a macbook pro. I do know what I'm talking about. If the slick OS is worth the extra money to you, then get a mac. But they really aren't much better at anything.
 
I love how any computer thread has someone saying get a mac! or fuck macs. Just shut the fuck up about this whole thing. If the thread title said mac vs. pc then you can bitch your little hearts out but if it doesn't then btich to someone who cares or better yet keep your fucking mouths shut.
