Im getting a laptop soon for college next year and if you buy it from the school bookstore you get a decent discount. so i have a choice of a few that the bookstore has. any advice on what to pick would be appriaciated.

SONY NR Notebook

SONY CR Notebook

Gateway E-475M Notebook

Gateway E-295C Tablet/Notebook

Gateway E-2610S Desktop

those are the only choices they have so i might just get a diffrent one on my own but im not sure yet.

personally i would buy an HP or a Dell over Sony or Gateway. Also Toshiba and Lenova make some really good laptops

oh and the last gateway one isn't a laptop.

The tablet gateway would be cool if you were doing stuff requiring a tablet pc but it is a waste of money if you dont have a purpose for it

What kind of discount do you get? Have you checked to see if its actually worth buying a laptop from the bookstore?

Also, what do you plan on using it for?

Hard to pick a computer for you without knowing what you will be using it for.

also another thing to look into is that some computer companys give student discounts. Doesnt look like you are looking for one, but the Apple store does give discounts for students, still may be more expensive though.

There are plenty of deals out there so you may want to compare prices from your bookstore to other sites. Companies also offer refurbished models with warranties as well. If it is possible, I'd get a Mac. I've had one for about a month and wouldn't go back to Windows, especially Vista.

I can find you a good one, but I need to know some stuff

-What do you want to use the laptop for?

-Word processing and net browsing?

-Design programs (adobe and such)

-Gaming

-What is your budget

from there the choices become more narrow

I love it on my desktop setup haha, no idea why so many people hate it.

To the op, I would seriously look into Dells and Macs, you can get good student discounts on both usually and they are just better laptops, especially over Sony's, they suck.

Really just depends on what your flavor is, I don't like Mac much but they make legit computers, Dells are great too for customer service and value. Don't be afraid of vista either, if your computer isn't a POS it runs really quick.

if you want vista and your not gaming, get min 2gb of ram and you'll run vista fine

if your gaming with vista, your going to want a really good fucking video card or your going to get worked by the OS and its system resource hogging. 3gb RAM or more would be advisable.

Laptops are derty cheap now compared to what they used to be.

I have had a dell inspiron 6400 for the past 2 years and its still running pretty well.

but out of those choices, go for the sony.

yeah they may be more expensive but its worth it because of quality parts.

gateway is shit quality

go on dell.com and make your own custom laptop. im not gonna go into specifics but your gonna want at least a dual-core intel processor and if you can try to get one with a core 2 duo processor. and for ram youre gonna want 1gb minimum, 2gb is good.
