Well having just been using my friends board for a while, im hooked, and now i wanna try to get my own if i ever get money. im guessing a longboard would be the best choice for first board prob, but i still don't know what to get. anyone know any good links to surf forums or something like the NS of surfing. o yea and i'm 5'10" east coast (long island) in case that helps. thanks.
 
look around some shops for some used boards, thats probably the best bet for something cheap, but if you want somethign expensive and good look at the following companies:

channel islands

local motion

hobie-good longboards

rusty

town n country

Im going to reccomend Surftec. theyre pop-mold boards (they pop out of a pre-cast mold designed by a specific shaper), mass produced, light (epoxy), and pretty durable. theyre almost indestructable on rocks and stuff. i reccomend them for a beginner, especally the Doug Haut shapes. because of the recent Clark foam shut-down, theyre readily available everywhere and the prices range from dirt cheap to bank (for the old shapes and the "balsa" boards). theyre the perfect beginner board for anyone.

thanks a lot for the help, i think im gonna go try to take a little trip to a couple surf shops and see what they reccomend, and see if i can pick up something
 
pre molded boards suck, some have big problems with them, some tc boards are really messsed up cause they werent hand shaped
 
true. thats why i reccomend the Haut ones, because I have surfed those a ton of times and I trust them. pre molded boards are good for a beginner, especially right now because foam is so expensive (thanks to Clark, again). but i agree, factory boards are less than the best.

I've been lucky enough to work with (basically apprentice) some shapers here in California and Hawaii and theres just that something extra about a hand shaped board, especially one you helped make. more personal abnd streamlined, you know?
 
don't get a longboard. You'll want to punt and do snaps and shit once you get better and you'll find it almost impossible to do on a longboard.
 
ebay. I just got an Al Merrick's board (Channel Island) from there for 113 dollars plus S&H the group that sentit to me has a huge wearhouse and sell tons of boards. it had a couple of dings and stuff that they fixed before shipping. but I got a $750 board for 113 its in almost perfect condition it only has one long discolored area because of thee epoxy they used to fix it. im gonna put a nice paint job over the whole board, personalize it a little and itl be as good as new
 
yea i was looking at ebay cause a lot of people are selling used boards but shipping is such a killer. it's over $75 for every auction i've seen
 
where do you live? im lucky to be living in Southern California where most of the sellers are so I could have done a pick up. unfortunatly the board I got was in North Carolina so I had to get it shipped. but the total was still under $200
 
yea unfortunately i live on long island and almost every board is in cali so shipping is always around $75 or more. im prob gonna go look around some shops and try to find something.
 
use craigslist, you can get some killer deals if you look around. Plus, no shipping, and you can inspect the board in person before buying.
 
yea i know but i was just saying that almost every board on ebay or other sites is usually from california. hopefully i'm going tomorrow to visit a few shops.
 
bummer man, i just traded in my old ron jon 6-10 board so i could get my new shortboard. i could have sold it to you for like 250. it would have been perfect for learnign
