Many jokes in the simpsons make external references, and thats what sometimes makes them sound too stupid or random or silly because you don`t get the jokes. I agree with some parts, A lot of the newer simpsons seem to be milking everything possible to thepoint where it sorta sucks, but there are a lot that are pretty funny if you actually get shit. Same with south park, super funny and witty....If you actually get it.

the family guy is pretty much the equivalent of a hangover shit in the tv show world.

I'd give them all the way to the 14th or 15th season. There was still at least 1 good episode per season coming out then. But really, think of every single good simpsons episode that is universally loved...and it most likely comes from season 8 or 9.
