When I post normal things, my karma goes down; when I deomstrate troll-like behaviour it somtimes goes up. How does one get taken seriously on this website?

Karma has a ton of factors involved in it - and its lifetime not just on a post-by-post basis. So if something you did a few days ago got downvoted, that will affect your current score.
The best way to get Karma is by contributing to the site. Write reviews, upload videos, put up photos, write articles, etc. As well, the more you comment and rate the media on the site, the more you'll go up.
Your forum reputation is only one part of the whole thing.
