Karma spike?

Elaborate? Some people are doubling, just curious as to what the reason is, revaluation of ratings?

It was a tweak I made yesterday to certain aspects of the Karma system.

Unfortunately we tend to keep that type of info close to us, so no, we can't really elaborate on it. You'll just have to trust us on this one.

Yeah, unfortunately I can't go into too much detail as to why, but it is however connected with MOTM. I really believe the tweaks will make a HUGE difference in making sure karma is accurate, but we'll definitely re-evaluate come December 1st.

If it that, and it seem plausible, then welcome to the new era of 12years old making 150+ aliases to make their karma go boom and k rape everyone else.

this new system is screwed

1. I gave this guy ^ karma and it doesnt show up

2. IT STOLE MA KARMAZ I want a full refund to where I was. Thats hard earned karma right there

The way everything works is actually really complex.

A few sections of the system (I'm not sure which ones -- but maybe Paul / Doug can chime in) only re-calculate at midnight, as it's a HUGE load on our database server and we simply can't be running them live.

Lost 75000 Karma. OH NOE TEH KARMAZ! If its a major mess up though the red squad will fix it. If its a good change they'll leave it.

Exactly! We're giving it a month to breathe, and will re-evaluate once our system spits out the top 20 members of the month.

well since I don't have a real penis, may as well have a big internet penis amiright!?

Just cuz you lost karma doesn't have anything to do with the system. In all likelihood it has more to do with your contributions to the site

Dude they haven't been 55% drop off bad. I was rated at 7 yesterday, 6.85 today. By my math(s) that would put me at -268,000 karma (yes negative) if I suddenly got rated at zero.

Looking around at a few members' karma graphs it looks like those who are more media active made massive gains and everyone else lost ground. Personally my .02, I can see why we would reward members who put out articles, pictures, and videos, but I don't think karma should be largely generated from those outlets.

Looking at it from a forum/gear based side it's only logical for me or any other member who wants to, to make a thread to generate discussion on gear, and other things. There's no point in writing a news article that will likely get little exposure and generate very little discussion, there's no point in posting pictures because it would be irrelevant to picture system (and pictures with text makes more sense in a thread) and yeah, I guess I could do videos, although I think the crowd here would rather see edits in the video section instead of tech talk stuff. I know it doesn't seem like it would take effort to make a thread and promote some deeper discussion but it does. Myself and a few other members are working just as hard as any filmer, writer, or photographer to produce quality forum content. It's just not posted as media.

So honestly, if that's how the new system works, there is a disconnect and it has made it unfair. Is it the end of the world? Ha, not really. But if there will be MOTM insentives and so forth I think members who don't generate large amounts of media content should be just as able to generate karma through the forums.

Then again, the new tweaks may not be working like that at all. Aside from the reds, who knows. If we have faith in them, and voice our respective opinions, it should all work.

Alright I'll talk sensibly for once.

What I really want to see you do right now is explain what you did. Not some half-arsed two-liner like what you've said so far, actually go into detail about what you changed. You say it makes it 'fairer', but why? At the moment it doesn't seem very fair to me, so just show that it is.

Unfortunately that's just not going to happen. The way we distribute / weigh / multiply karma has always been a secret, and will most likely stay that way for the foreseeable future. If people knew how all our systems worked, they would definitely abuse them.

Simply put, the system was flawed... and even though it's far from perfect now, it's my job to stay on top of things and make minor tweaks throughout the year to try and find the best possible calculations.

If I could give you more information I would.

Why couldn't you have separated old and new karma? Like made old karma a constant and then added new karma to that?

you realize if he explains how the new system really works there will be masses of nsers who care way too much about karma who will find a way to manipulate the system. especially the butthurt kids who lost a ton with this recent upgrade

The system simply doesn't work that way.... and it would probably be the equivalent of trying to divide by zero if we were to try and force something like that.

Newschoolers a SUPER complex site, with multiple types of systems / databases / algorithms / etc all working together. The issue is that most of these weren't developed or updated at the same time, so the way the interact is very finicky.

The real question is why do you give a shit? It's some algorithm involving all sorts of stuff. No two members use this site the same way, so no "value system" is going to accurately reflect the quality of a member's contributions.

There are people here who don't add pics, videos, articles, reviews that make some incredibly thoughtful, respectful, insightful posts who in my eyes are worth ten kids who post every pseudo-artsy dslr pic they take at their flattish icy mountain.

If you're in a thread and you look at someone's karma before you respond or interact or whatever, you're doing it wrong. I don't ascribe any significance to the number for many reasons not the least of which being that the calculation and even the system itself has changed half a dozen times. Usernames and icons make an impact on me, as in, people who have consistently made good posts over the years are the top members in my eyes, not the people who review every ski sock, face mask, and sticker pack they buy.

It's not "fair"....and yet, why are you riled up about it?

ok....

But where do forum posts come into this? So far you've told us about content, so is Karma now effectively a measure of the quality of content you put out?

I was actually going to quote the post but you deleted it. Shame, I wouldn't have got bitchy if you had, I had a decent comment lined up.

You said something like: 'we want to reward people who are putting out good content, rather than people who are just consuming'.

just stop.. He's not going to tell you. He doesn't care if your feelings are hurt. Neither does the rest of ns.
