Hey M&A,

A couple weeks ago, I posted a draft to the new reel I’m working.

Released it today. Would be stoked to hear your thoughts. Thanks for the previous critiques.

Cheers,

Kalum

Every thing I see from you consistently is better then whatever blew my mind last time. So stoked to see where you go!

Great stuff man, those shots were awe inspiring. What were you shooting on? Looks like some real live 4K and a nice array of glass.

I need to find a way to get a 15K loan, haha

Hey guys,

What your thoughts are on this? I'm thinking I should make it strictly an outdoors/action reel. I just don't have enough commerical-like shots in the orig for clients IMO. Anyways, here is an updated version just with action shots. I'd just replace the file on Vimeo, if people think it's a idea...

I think it's always good to keep diversity, but I don't want to really get into whether or not you should do an action reel or not.

But initial thoughts on this reel. Wasn't a big fan of the door/bird shot. They weren't particularly strong (thought the same thing in the older reel.)

Also LOVED the EWS of the skier/mountain at the end. Work that into you reel whichever one you use please.

Thanks Matt. Yah, I totally agree. Part of me just feels like my orig just says, "this guys shoots outdoor shit and a couple weddings". Maybe that isn't a bad thing though.... Really on the fence about this haha

I don't think it's a bad thing unless you're specifically looking to get more wedding jobs. IMO the "outdoor shit" is so well shot and put together that any potential client should realize your skills can translate to other subjects as well

I would disagree with this. A couple would be more prone to hire you for a wedding if they see you have shot a wedding before. Ultimately a reel is for your future clients and showing the environments that you are comfortable shooting in are key. They'll be more comfortable in their decision to reach out to you.

I think having it in there is great. Yes people may think hey this guy shot a wedding and does mostly outdoor stuff.... but he shot a wedding. Like matt said it will make the client feel more comfortable reaching out to you. If you can show you can shoot in as many areas as possible the client will feel alot more comfortable hiring you, because they trust you can perform well in many areas. Which from your first reel i saw that. Both were great, i love your work. But the first one showed your abilities to clients more than your second. Altho i enjoyed the second one better as just a video.

Hope this helps!

I probably didn't make it clear enough, but I liked the first one (with the wedding shots) better. I totally agree he should keep the wedding stuff in... I meant that even with only a few clips of wedding footage it's enough to at least show he has experience, unless he was specifically trying to get more wedding gigs
