K2 ski boot issue (130 Pinnacle)

Having an issue here and need some advice:

Bought these on eBay around 2/2015 and love them. Took them into a boot fitter recently to get custom foot beds. Came back to pick them up and the guy somehow ripped/cracked the ankle piece from the walk mode switch to the circular piece on the side of the boot.

I emailed the eBay seller to get his take though would like some NS advice on how to proceed.

Can they be sent back under warranty? Should I have the boot fitter address the issue?

Thanks!

Sounds like it was the shops fault and you should talk to them about how to go about it. If they broke it, they should hook you up somehow.

Since you're not the original owner the warranty probably doesn't apply to you.

If the shop broke em, they need to make it right. They can def warranty them, its pretty easy to fudge the ownership records when a shop is sending them back. Talk to them, be nice but assertive!

Coukd you post a pic of what happened!?

Agreed. Plus, even if the boots are not covered by warranty (which they technically aren't), the shop is fully responsible here. Their actions, even if they were trying to fix the boot, led to its breakage. They should cover the costs of fixing/replacing the boot. And as Japanada said, be nice and polite- it really can make the difference here.

Thank you guys for the feedback. It appears the back part under the walk mode switch caught on something and then cracked:

Random question--do you guys think I can still ski on these? If not I can't do any backcountry until they are fixed or replaced. Have other boots but my touring gear is setup with kingpins. Thoughts?

Definitely not. Skiing cracked plastic is really bad idea. It will only get worse with skiing and continue to separate. Don't do it.

Thank you. This is what I figured though it was hard to take that I've been put out of commission by the fitter that was suppose to improve the boot performance..

damn that is an impressive crack!! Just so Im clear, you noticed the crack before you left the boot fitter? Did you say anything to them?

Yeah. As you said it was quite noticeable. We were both trying not to get heated so the conversation was more along the lines of where I bought them and so on. I have since contacted that person. He use to be the K2 Colorado mountain rep but no longer works for K2. Told me to go back to the boot fitter and have them contact K2 customer service..

Holy crap... yeah don't ski those, they're toast. I expect the first time you leaned into them they would explode and probably take out your ankle too.

Generally speaking it would be on the bootfitter but I've never seen a pair of boots fail like that, if they deal with K2 at all they should be able to come to some sort of agreement.

K2 had a pretty big issue with the cuffs on the Pinnacle boots in the first production year. The shop should have no problem getting you a new cuff and doing the installation for you. I can't tell you how many cuffs I've replaced but I do know it was a lot.

Not the fault of the shop as it was a pretty widespread problem.

That's good to know. This will be great to add to the conversation I need to have with the boot fitter--going in early next week.

Big thanks to all of you for the info!

So I'm back beating this dead horse again. After much ado about nothing, the bootfitter came back and said something along the lines of "we don't do business with K2 and they said to take it to an authorized K2 dealer." The guy is obviously trying to get out of having to deal with the issue even though he is the one who broke my boot.

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. Someone replied in this thread that it's a known issue which hopefully I can just deal with myself. Please let me know your take.

What I would do first is find an authorized K2 dealer and try to get the boot warrantied through them. 9/10 it will work without any issue. If for some estranged reason they won't warranty the boot because the crack was not caused by their problem (i.e. they claim the boot-fitter did it) then you need to go back to the boot-fitter who you say cracked it and demand they replace the boot.

I hope and think you won't need to go down the latter road, but bear in mind that it is a possibility. Most likely though, a K2 dealer will find a way to hook it up (especially if you are super nice and bring donuts/cookies).
