JVC Camera & MOD files???

Anyone have problems with MOD files from JVC HDD camcorders?
So far in order to have them play on my Mac, I need to convert them using the Any Video Converter, but after I convert them they look like shit. Anyone else have problems with JVC MOD files and have solutions to get them to play on a mac and usable in iMovie?

I was using anyvideoconverter, the free version. I needed to rename the files to .mpg from .MOD to get them to even open in the converter. Then I would convert them to .mp4. I can mess with bitrate and resolution and some other crap, but no matter what it seems to look like bad. I'm assuming it's lossing some quality no matter what conversion I do. I plan on editing them in iMovie.
I'm more curious if there is a way to get these to work without converting them.
