Local pro snowboarder Josh Malay's health fading

By Randy Wyrick/Daily Staff Writer

February 28, 2004

A popular local professional snowboarder's brain has stopped functioning, stemming from an injury while riding in Spain.

Josh Malay, 23, of Avon suffered a head injury while riding in the Spanish Pyrenees. The incident occurred while he was riding for a story to appear in Transworld Snowboarding. He had left Avon last Tuesday.

Details were not clear at deadline Saturday night regarding the incident. Some of his family members, friends and business associates were on their way to Spain to help deal with the tragedy.

Malay moved to Avon six years ago to pursue his dream of becoming a professional snowboarder. He graduated a semester early from Prior Lake High School in Prior Lake, Minn., and made his way to Colorado.

He lived in the Vail Valley for four and a half years.

During that time, he came to be one of Colorado's most accomplished and renowned snow riders. His professional riding exploits earned him the praise and admiration of several of his peers and colleagues.

He was sponsored by The Other Side Snowboard Shop in Beaver Creek, Oakley, Nixon, grenade, Santa Cruz and Vail.

Malay was applauded for not only his snowboarding expertise, but more importantly, friends said for being such a great guy.

He recently established himself as one of the top names in the sport. Much of that new-found fame resulted from a cover photo that appeared on Snowboarder magazine. In the photo, Malay is performing a stunt sliding down a fire escape in the abandoned mining town of Gilman.

RIP Josh, everybody will miss you

here is his interview w/ K2 skis about his life and the pistols...

K2: How did you get into art?

JM: It's something I just did when I was really young- you know how to kinda come to the conclusion your good at some thing early on, pretty much how it happed, and I was way into Freddy Krueger

K2: When did you figure out you had a talent?

JM: Around high school I did alot of different projects on my own to kill time, not really art class or anything. I realized I liked art and wanted to continue learning as much as possible in all mediums especially mixed media.

K2: Do you have any formal training or is it all raw?

JM: No formal training Only personal practice and serious time behind a pen so id say RAW! I think you have to develop a style and evolve that into you art that's what people remember and appreciate. example= any great painter you see their work and your like oh, thats ....

K2: How do you know Seth?

JM: I actually met seth a few years ago in Vail, we discussed killing everyone and we spoke about skull crushing death metal. I also was stoked to meet Seth and found him to be a super rad guy. We also talked about our millions of dollars, our mansions, mowing lawns and MY Ferrari. It was sweet.

K2: What do you do for a living?

JM: I, uhhhhhhhhh, Shred the Gnar and draw stuff and help out The OtherSide shred shop. It's pretty fun I am really lucky. I never thought I could make some $$ doing things I like.

K2: The OtherSide is in Beaver Creek, does that make you rich or something?

JM: Yea, actually I'm loaded. I like animal fur...my import-export business is going great. Me and Seth are over the whole snow s**t. We are going Fur!!!!!

K2: You are one of the most underrated snowboarder especially on the jib side... why do you think that is?

JM: God, dude, that's heavy. I'm just getting started... learning the whole program is fun but it can be hard. I'm just trying to jib, shred, slash, slaughter and kill everything all the time, Oh and garden Too! so relaxing. woooooord.

K2: Is this year shaping up to be a break through year with the cover shot and everything?

JM: Yea, seems like it. I hope so. That would be really neat.

K2: Who do you ride for?

JM: OAKLEY - THE OTHERSIDE SHRED SHOP -NIXON- FREDDY KRUEGER SNOWBOARDS (SO HOT RIGHT NOW)

Josh Malay: Unstoppable spirit

Andrew Harley

February 29, 2004

Before he left Avon a week ago, Josh Malay flipped through a stack of airline tickets; passage booked to places the young man had only read about or seen on television. He was off for the adventure of a lifetime, a snowboard tour to some of Europe's most glamorous locations.

The questions come rapid fire: How did it happen? What was he doing?

The answers are sketchy but to the point: He was snowboarding. He fell and hit his head. His brain stopped functioning. His body quickly followed.

The brutal decisions have been made to donate as many organs as possible. Josh lives no longer, others will live through him.

A community of people spent the weekend mourning Malay's death. He was 23.

Malay's body and spirit were unable to defeat the lethal blow his head encountered on a rock in the Spanish Pyrenees. He was declared dead early Sunday morning.

In the days before he left for Spain, Malay confessed to his most cherished confidant, girlfriend Lindsay Aldridge, a feeling of uneasiness about the trip.

A rising star in the professional snowboarding world, Malay took the trip to ride for a story for Transworld Snowboarding.

'The kid was a strong kid. He was on top of the world. I thought for sure he'd pull it out. And I think if he'd had it his way he'd still be here,' said The Other Side Snowboard Shop Manager Kyle Schneiberg.

As Malay rode down, he hit a relatively small cliff, falling awkwardly and hitting his head hard on a rock, according to his friends.

Lots of hearts are broken. Friends look at the mountains he loved so much and remember days when he was invincible.

'He was cruising down and hit a mellow cliff,' said Malay's close friend of six years Rob Bak. 'He was having fun and just crashed a little weird.'

The cranial traumas Malay suffered from his fall required emergency brain surgery. The surgeries rendered no improvement, and Malay lost the use of his brain. Though he was alive, he was no longer capable of living without the support a list of medical machines. So, in the early morning hours of Sunday, Malay's family decided to authorize his removal from life support.

'It's kind of hard for all of us to grasp over here. He called Lindsay the night before it happened and said, 'I don't feel right being here.' She had a hard time sleeping that night (Thursday) and was woken by Josh's mom calling her,' said Bak. 'A lot of people in this valley have been really touched by him, and it's not even just here; it's people all over the U.S. and abroad.'

Malay left his home of Prior Lake, Minn., when he was 17 - after he graduated high school a semester early - to live his snowboarding dreams in the tall mountains of Colorado. In a recent interview with the Vail Daily, Malay admitted that his parents didn't understand why he chose snowboarding over college, especially considering his talents in fine arts.

'They just thought that I was throwing that away, but you can always do art,' said Malay. 'I've learned more from this than I think I would have sitting in a classroom. I've been traveling, I've met so many people. Everybody thinks it's cool now.'

Malay's job at The Other Side provided him the opportunity to build his snowboarding career, which had been growing more lucrative with each passing day. His sponsors included Oakley, Nixon, Vail, grenade, The Other Side and, most recently, Santa Cruz.

'He wanted to go exactly where he was going,' said Bak. 'He was having fun and he was getting paid for it. He was making every day count.

'He's made it higher up in professional snowboarding with contracts and all that, and he still gets up every day at 8 in the morning and takes his girlfriend to work and hits the hill before everyone else.'

Bak, 26, has lived in the valley since 1996, and currently lives in Eagle-Vail.

'We became really tight friends throughout the years. Riding around Beaver Creek, he heard about me and I heard about him,' said Bak. 'Josh was pretty much one of the most fun-loving ... he was the most friendly person. He could mess with people's heads, but deep down he was always just a wonderful person.'

On Malay's way out of town, Bak gave him back a sweater that had been traveling in the back seat of Bak's car for a while. In return, Malay gave his friend $200 as Bak had just lost his job delivering pizzas for a local shop days earlier.

'He said he thought it was a fair trade. 'Just get me back when I get home,' he said. He was looking out for me.'

Nothing seems more tragic than when a young man dies for no apparent reason, so one can only hope that from the beautiful things Malay shared with the people around him, as memories fade, hope and compassion will grow stronger with them.

'I love him and I miss him,' said Bak. 'He was Josh. He was everybody's best friend.'

RiP Josh Malay.

I skied all my life in the Pyrenees,I am from there...Where did exactly happen?Any info?

Condolences to everyone who knew him.

Lots of people get killed in those mountains, mainly because of avalanches,we have the most unstable snowpack on earth...Maybe there wasn't enough snow to hit the cliff? We dlon't usually hit cliffs unless there's like tons of fresh snow..

Anyways,i hope people keep looking to the Spanish pyrenees, there's some awesome snow and terrain, but we only have oneor two snowparks, and crappy ones.I've been writting emails to my home mountain to ask them for some rails and tables and a nice pipe, but as usually, they refuse to even think about it.They just care about the money...

But at least our powder stays there for a looong time,as most of the people hate powder in there.(that's the closest to heaven i can get)

-----------------------------------------------------------What would happen if the powder was warm?if u actually needed summer in order for snow to fall?Chest deep hot pow?And in Winter, sand would come down the skies, and we would be pissed off, because our cars wouldn't work...

I would like to send out condolensces to all of Joshs family and friends. He was well respected and stoked all that saw him ride. It brings tears to my eyes everytime I go through the entrance at Vail's Park and see Josh's tag on the Park sign. May you rest in peace and find that endless powder field in the sky.

Did he do all the art work on the Pistols?

Let's face it, no one posts anything serious on NS, and even if I wanted to, it would be answered by some not-so-clever variation of the following:

'You're gay', 'you suck', 'I fucked your mom last night', 'Eat shit', 'fuck you', or my favourite, 'I'm a better skier than you'. Jib_This

Thanks a lot guys for all of your support. Josh was more than a great snowboarder and a great artist. Josh was also a great friend. He will always be remembered by all who know him well. All I have to say to him is 'Thanks for teaching me to slide logs on skis!' Josh died doing what he loved. I know he was smiling before he fell. Josh was so stoked all the time and was a joy to be around.

Again, thanks for all your support guys.

josh was an amazing person and its truely amazing how big of an impact he left on the world. he left a huge mark on the snowboarding the comunity and a huge mark on anyone who had the pleasure of spending time with him. josh will be in our hearts forever. i wish i had known him better and i can't imagine how hard it must have been for those he knew him very well like spinks did to have seen him leave us so soon.

And it makes me see, every puff that I breathe, potent herbs and leaves could ease the world . . .

So, We roll and smoke and choke and- pass and toke and hand it back to ya.
