So I'm off to ski the mountains of Niseko japan for my 21st birthday, going to be skiing powder mostly, for two weeks. trees etc, and i'm hoping to get out to massif or something to ski some east powder later on,
Debating these two skis, i do like the extra width of the chelters, but am finding mixed reviews on the flex patterns of both of these skis.
i'm a light guy at 135 and 5'10 and am looking for a ski i can just whip around, i skied the liberty double helix last winter and loved it (dont know if anyone has skied those as well)
cant decide between the two, give me a reason to go one way or the other. i'm sure ill love either.
leaning chetlers atm, but it was jj's a week ago

I'd say chetlers, simply because surface area=float.

I liked the chetlers better than JJ's because of the more even flex-pattern (with slightly softer tail). I haf a really awkward on/off feeling in mixed conditions with JJ's, I think that's because the cambered part is pretty stiff while the rockered/tapered part is pretty soft. Going from soft to harder snow in one turn when engaging different sections of the ski sometimes felt a bit weird.

This is how I felt and that does'nt mean that you will have the same experience, both are good skis and I suppose you'll be happy with whatever you choose but my bet is the chetlers.

Just a heads up, it doesn't snow every day of winter in Niseko, my friends went last January and got skunked. Hope it does for you, I might be there this Jan as well.

I have ridden both and spent 2 weeks on the Chetlers in Japan and they were amazing but to be honest they are pretty much the same ski and i would lean towards the Chetler due to the slightly wider waist width. In summary you wont be disappointed with either ski.

thats sick your going to japan, im thinking about trying to head out that way and do some skiing in the next few years. make sure to post how your trip when im gonna be interested

I would 185 jjs. I use mine basically everyday and couldn't be happier. My buddy with the chetlers feels like they are a bit much but that might just be him.

thanks man, my bdays dec 31st so it should be a pretty solid new years.
i'll probably update NS with some pics and vids while im out there.

For Niseko I'd go with the Chetlers. Sure it doesn't snow every day there but when it decides to come down, it tends to puke. 2 of my friends were on Obsetheds when we were over there and both commented that they wouldn't have minded a wider ski. Assume it'll dump, you'll enjoy it more on a big ski when it does.Plus IMO go a little shorter - the wide open stuff gets tracked there before you can blink, if you want all day fresh pow you have to get into the tight trees where you sometimes need to be able to flick your skis around.
The park is pretty average so don't worry about that aspect. They make an effort but the jumps tend to be a bit odd. If you're not perfectly dialed for speed you either go way, way deep or hit some of the most vicious knuckles you'll ever encounter.
If it rains and the snow is all crusty just hit the onsen or go lap the airbag at Hanazono for a bit.
Oh and take a clear or really, really light lens for your goggles - the night skiing is sick, especially when it's dumping. Dropping skier's left of Miharashi in the dark (no lights out there, relying on reflected light from the clouds) while it's puking snow is a must-do in my opinion.
