Jibij...This is a must.

Josh,

I've read about how you are planning on sponsoring a bunch of kids to fly all over the place and compete and what not, but I thnk what you really need to focus on is Boulder.

Youre market is right here, in town and if you want maximum exposure I suggest the following.

Every year the CU snowboard team sets up a rail jam on the hill in Boulder, called Heavy Metal on The Hill, and every year I try to enter to no avail. The problem with the Heavy Metal event, besides not letting skiers enter, is that they hold it in early to mid spring when it still gets cold at night, but kids aren't really all about skiing any more. I think the key would be to hold an event like this, just an open demo perhaps, on campus (or on the hill) in the Fall, just before Christmas break.

Get some really crazy rails, guaranteed to induce bloodshed and nasty crashes, or some absurdly long rails and some boxes or something and throw them up under lights in a high traffic area.

This would be the perfect time, when kids are all worked up to go skiing and its not too cold. The freshmen will be roaming Boulder, looking for the social events to make new friends and learn where all the ski shops are, and it would be just before christmas so kids can come to your shop and spend money.

Do it.

okay. 1.) liability is huge for this event. 2.) the city of boulder has only agreed to let the snowboard team hold any type of event like heavy metal. 3.) where are you going to get snow that early? eldo doesn't really get that much and it's usually pretty late in the season. that's why heavy metal is so late. 4.) boulder is his main market, thus the decision to advertise with freeskier and not freeze for this year. 5.) i don't think a copy cat event would be so great. the 'rail jam on the street' has already been taken. even if the rails were better (wouldn't be too hard. this year's weren't that impressive) it's still the same principle.

what we need to do is talk to satellite/raul and see if we could work out some kind of deal to get skiers in the jam.

I may be able to get the Jibij riders into the metal on the hill. Because they would be covered under my liability.

That sounds a little absurd. They aren't prohibiting skiers from the jam because of liability reasons.

You could definitely put on an event that early, perhaps with ice rink snow.

Josh, how much does your liabilty insurance cost/ year roughly. My business liabilty insurance is $435/year and I'm in construction. I dont think it would be unreasonable to ask raoul (however the hell you spell his name) if you two could join forces at least.

You could stretch the run another 20 yards or so down 13th st. and make it like a skier/ boarder battle...that might be cool, just tossing ideas.

Either way, there has to be some kind of event like this for skiers...it would be HUGE for your shop.

The other advantage is that we have several ski mags based right here in Boulder. They (especially Freeskier) could defiinitely contribute funds for bigger ramps, rails, etc. Personally, I wouldn't even waste your time advertising in magazines right now. I think you should concentrate on the local level...ie stickers, flyers, catalogs, local contests and jams, demo booths....etc, etc..

To each his own, but I'd really like to see your shop succeed and with all the resources you have to work with, I think you could make it work. I would just suggest you take it a little slower and be cautious where you put your money.

Anyway,

Just my two cents.

And another thing...

It wouldn't be a copycat event at all because its going to be much better...theres more money in skiing, put it to use.

Liabilty for an event like that is covered by entrance costs I'm sure or else it would never happen, thats what insurance is for, lets not forget.

CUST is dumb and closed minded. Theyre a bunch of kids who think the way they dress makes them creative, unique people.

Step it up or someone else will I promise.

Good Luck, hope I didnt come off as an asshole, I'm not...always.

Gotta get back to work.

the marketing budget for the shop is huge, and freeskier gave us really, really good rates. it's such a good idea to advertise in freeskier especially because the cu ski and snowboard club, which is 5,000+ members strong, gets every issue for free. that's a lot of rich kids with a lot of money to spend, whether they are actually good on the hill (majority aren't) or not.

there are no entrance costs for the riders in the jam.

The Heavy Metal on the Hill event is a great idea, and I would love to get skiers in it. But it doesn't work exactly the way you think it does. I was looking into it last year, and they had to get permits to close down the street, and the Boulder City government doesn't really want to give out any more of those. The athletes in that don't pay an entry fee, they are hand picked by Raoul and some others, so it's an invite only event. Others have tried to have a skiing one, and it's been shot down every time by the city. The only way I see it happening is if we combine skiing with the snowboarding, which I will see if I can do. But it would still be an invite event, so only so many skiers could do it.

Are you sure about the entry fee?? And if its invite only, why were they asking for promo videos for entry?? No offense, but I'm not sure what youre saying is completely fact.

Why have it on the street?? Can't it be on Ferrand or something??

I'm not a complete idiot, I've been in Boulder for a while and I understand how this place works because I live here year round. I'm familiar with permits because I'm in a construction trade and theres a permit for almost everything.

I guess if you really dont think its doable, dont even try, forget it.

...and so what if there is no entry fee...why couldn't you charge a fee to make up your costs? There also may be some people willing to help out, physically and financially.

I think Satellite is really doing a poor job of advertising and of the selection of their inventory. Theres like a very small group of kids in Boulder who actually frequent and buy things from them. Other than that, I'm not sure how they get by.

I'm sure about the invite only thing. I know people involved with it. They have a certain number of slots available, in which people can try to prove themselves and get in. But if they just had an entry fee, there would be way too many people trying to do it. I will see about getting skiers into the event, but I don't want to try and hold our own. That would just alienate snowboarders. I don't hate them, and most of them don't hate us. It would be better if we worked together.

An entry fee still wouldn't cover my insurance costs. I have to cover the city as well. Do you know how much the US Open insurance is? It's ridiculous, and they have a max of about 200 people able to enter an event. A few years ago, the US Open wasn't even able to get insurance for every day of the event, so you couldn't do inverts the first day. It's a lot, and it just isn't in the budget this year. Perhaps next year we could do something.

I am Klaus, submit to my iron will or I will destroy JIBIJ! - Klaus O.

hmmmm..yeah. But this isn't the Us Open...We're talking about 50 kids and some scaffolding. I'm sure you could pull it off.

Heavy Metal is NOT invite only...thats been determined. It is selective though...I guess you could call it invitational.

Lets see...50*25=$1250. True, thats not much, but I would think that would at least cover a permit for a semi cool location. That, combined with sponsors, you have an event, maybe even a profitable one.

But its your prerogative, so if you think you'd rather try to join up with CUST, thats cool too. But I would say youre at least going to have to try to expand the arena. And dont be a snob, there are good riders out there, willing to pay you to let them hit a rail. Think about it.

I hate girls in COWBOY HATS...

dude, you sound like you have some great ideas. As a shop it isnt in the budget and we dont have the manpower to host an event. Since you think it will be super cool, you should get the shit together, get the insurance, get the clearance from the city, and then give us a ring. Perhaps we can help out as a sponsor.

As of right now, we have a lot of obligations and we cannot justify holding an event yet.

Thanks for your suggestions. As you can see from the responses above, we have taken your thoughts into consideration. Feel free to stop by the shop in the fall.

renegade rail jams, just keep it real underground, no permits no nothing, when the cops come, punch them in the nuts and run.

Okay. Thank you for taking my ideas into consideration. I see that you are all very busy opening a shop and flying the A Team all over the world, so I will try again later. What would I get from going to all the trouble of organizing an event?? That doesnt make any sense. But wait, you'd sponsor the event?? Could you put me in touch with the division manager?

10-4 Guys, sounds like you got it all figured out.

I hate girls in COWBOY HATS...

Yeah!!

We'll just tell the cops we have corporate sponsorship and insurance...lots of it, and that it costs lots of money.

I hate girls in COWBOY HATS...

who told you we were flying anyone anywhere? if the a-team is travelling this summer it's on their own budget. not the shop's.

nca777,

the only reason why you want to 'call the whole thing off' is because you know you were wrong. plus why do you have to say something so accusing when you have no idea what the truth is?
