J Skis vs ON3P

Any thoughts on difference in quality, value, performance etc.? I'd like to hear some opinions (and facts, if you have them.) Thanks for the input guys!

The key difference is that there is only one model of J Skis right now, so you can really only compare one model of ON3P to J Skis.

The J Ski is a 178 cambered ski with a soft, springy flex. There's some early rise in it, but not a ton. It feels closest to maybe an old Line Anthem, or the Travelling circus.

I rode the filthy rich today, and that is a very different experience. Its rockered pretty heavy in the front and much stiffer. Compared there its kind of what you like vs. one being better than the other.

Mousseau rode the Cartel, and though he hasn't ridden the J Ski yet, his theory is that its closer to the type of ski that J is. I will try to ride the Cartel tomorrow to get you a more accurate comparison.

Both sick companies, but very different. What do you like in a ski? What skis are your current favorites for park/light all mountain?

for sure its personal opinion. they're both made with great quality by two amazing companies. i have FRs, and i've ridden my friends ns collab skis. i personally like mine more (i might be a little biased!), but its really what you want in a ski. i'd say the biggest riding difference between the two is one being mostly cambered while the other one has a ton of tip and tail rocker with some camber. you can't go wrong with either ski.

I was having an eternal debate with myself earlier this winter whether to order a pair of jmos or go for the jskis first!. My choice this time landed on the jskis as I really liked the concept JLev has come up with and the ski shape is something I know I'll like. Even though there is no user feedback on these skis, I'm certain JLev knows what he is doing.

There is also no doubt in my mind that ordering a pair of jmos would have been great as well, but I'll get some more on3p skis later on. I've been using the Caylor as my main powder ski for the last 3 seasons and I've been to places like Hokkaido, Chamonix, Italy etc on them and they are totally awesome.

I will provide some feedback on the First! 184 once I get my hands on them.

From what I've heard they are high quality, you can generally expect high quality out of handmade skis from Canada or the US

Apologies, you are absolutely right. I guess I just had the Newschoolers ski in my head.

Yes, the J Skis are good quality. They are just a very specific type of ski, whereas other companies have much wider offerings. I'm positive that this will change over time.

To answer the original question, today I went out and rode the Prester, which is the closest thing in their lineup to what J Skis is doing.

https://www.newschoolers.com/reviews/2795/Prester

The Prester was definitely badass, but very different than the Newschoolers J Ski. It was cambered, stiff and built for hitting massive jumps, super pipes and charging super fast. I absolutely loved it, and it had dramatically better edge grip than the J ski I was riding.

I'd sum it up by saying that if you go with ON3P, you get a company that builds a stiffer ski, and has a bunch of different offerings of creative shapes and styles of skiing. The Filthy Rich is a very cool park ski using crazy rocker and an interesting shape. The Prester is a burly cambered park ski for the big stuff. J Skis you get really cool graphics, and a ski that is very soft, springy and playful. The wider one they offer likely would have the same characteristics - though I have not tested this - and would be a whole pile of fun.

You should try a rockered ski, as its an interesting experience. They are a lot better when you get stuck in some snow with your park skis, though personally I still really like a more traditional cambered soft ski when playing around in the park.

I've heard that the sidewalls on ON3P are some of the toughest around, as are the bases. Have you had personal experience with this (especially the Filthy Rich)? By the way, I meant rockered, not rocketed, I was on my phone.

yeah they're bombproof. i ran mine over a ton of rocks at breckenridge, accidentally of course, and i didn't get a single scratch on my bases. same for the sidewalls, i haven't had any problems with them.

that's sick, I think I'm decided on getting the 14/15 Filthy Riches for next season. My pair of Line planks get a core shot at every damn opportunity, it's getting really annoying.

Yes they are definitely burly skis overall. The catch with that though is it makes them really stiff comparatively. When you're just buttering around and jibbing on the east coast, that stiffness is a lot to deal with. It can be pretty annoying even if you're not into stiff skis.

The rocker of the Filthy rich helps out with this for butters, but its going to be a different experience.

I'll check em out, I like that they're not built by Ching Chong and Ding Dong in a sweatshop in China... American made is the way to go for sure

so would you guys say that J skis are worth buying? I recently bought skis this year which is the only reason I'm hesitating on buying another pair but I really like the tropic thunder part deux and the fact that there are only 60 of them being made makes me think that if i don't like them i can probably find someone to sell them too....opinions?

You can ski on them for three days and return them anyway for all of your money back, which would be better too.

yea i saw that but i have to buy new bindings so if i would send them back then i would lose money on the bindings. i might just get them and either sell my current skis to help pay or sell the J skis if i dont like them

I'd personally go with ON3P, there quality is unmatched. The J skis look cool and im sure the guy knows what he's doing but my friend just got a pair and he loves how they ski but idk about the durability. If you were set on J Skis i would wait until some reviews come out before buying. But you can't go wrong with on3p.

I mean yes from what I know of them I'd definitely give them a 'OK to buy' rating. They're a very fun ski and I like them a lot.

Now the main issue is that I get free skis often. Its part of the job, but this skewes my opinion because durability isn't something I end up testing a lot. Not trying to sound like a dick, just making sure you understand my opinion.

Between what ON3P has and J offers, the main difference (if we're talking park skis) is if you want a stiff ski or if you want a soft springy ski. J is softer and springier, ON3P has stiffer skis with more playful shapes.

what size would you recommend for the J Ski tropic thunder? I'm 5'8'' 170 and an intermediate rider. just curious what size other people are riding that are around my height on these skis

i would get the 164 if you like a shorter ski but in general a 170 would be better for you.

i'm your size but 140, and I ride 178 park skis which feels like the right length, If i were you I would get the 178s, the 170s would likely be pretty unstable on jumps.

Comparing the 171 FT and the 171 tropic thunders do they have the same rocker length? Or does one have more rocker than the other.
