J-BAR... What the heck is it?

I'm looking at all of the features on this years FullTilts, and have noticed that about half of the models have a J-Bar, and half don't. It supposedly helps keep your your ankle in place, but I can't figure out what the part actually is.
Does anyone know what this part looks like, where it goes, and if it helps?????

I'm guessing it looks like a J.

yea im guessing it wraps around the heel and gives your ankle more support
