Itunes- WTF?

Ok, so I just downloaded itunes because I'm going to buy an iPod. I've been using Windows Media Player for years, and it's time to move on.

So I download itunes and some of my music is already in the library. Ok, so now I just need to add the rest manually.

Well, I think I finally have everything in there, but then I notice something. I HAVE 81 gigs of music and only 3300 songs! WTF?

This is disturbing, considering my laptop's harddrive is only 80gb. It really doesn't make sense...on WMP it said I had around 30 gigs. I know it has to transfer all the WMA formatted songs into AAC (which is taking forever), and someone told me takes up more space, but seriously-- does this make any sense? I was counting on everything fitting onto a 30 gig iPod. Am I missing something?

^Definitely no long videos, but yeah, it's still converting to AAC. It'll probably take a while, so I'll just wait and see what happens.

when i changed to itunes from wmp i found that alot of songs that had to get converted got copied and came up in two folders, so i had two of each song, one in itunes format and one in wmp format.

go and have a look and see if thats happening for you. try my music, then itunes music folder. thats where mine doubled to. i tunes told me that i had the amount of itune style music, then my harddrive told me i had double that.

made my comp kinda shitty for a couple of hours till i worked out what the hell was going on. then came the deleting of songs fun.

Screw apple, get a Zen Creative Vision: M. They can do more than an Ipod, and you don't need to deal with all that Itunes shit.

Was all your music in WMA format? If so, be prepared for a mess. Itunes is a bitch and makes new folders for every song you have and puts the AAC in it and leaves the WMA files. So you have to delete all the old wma files manually after. I'd also recommend you go to preferences and choose encode to mp3 seeing as how mp3 is more universal.

How should I go about deleting the doubles/WMA files? Through itunes or go into the My Music folder? Will these new itunes files take up additional space in addition to WMA files?

Also, how long will about 3K WMA files take to be converted? It's taking for ever, holy shit...

alright i had to do the same thing between two huge hard drives. what you do is this:

goto preferences and make sure that the "copy files to my itunes folder when importing" is checked

and "organize my itunes" is checked

then all you do is add all the folders that your wmp uses into itunes by going to file>add folder

this will copy all over your songs and rename them by thei ID3 tags. if it needs to convert let it.

then goto bed. you'll wake up with a ton of music in the itunes folder and then you delete the other folders of music.

now organize the names in itunes and make all the info correct. after you're done, uncheck the organize files selection, then apply. then recheck it, and itunes will rename all the folder/songs correctly.

and that's that.

this happened to me when i got a new computer. i had 2 copies of every song and 3 copies of alot. ive been going through and deleting them by hand it sucks.
