It can happen so easily

Well today I learned that a friend of a friend of mine broke his 5th and 6th vertibrae skiing. Good skiier too apparently, I'm not sure what trick he was trying or anything, but he hit a small kicker, nothing even that big, something he had done 1000 times before, and he fell frontwards like onto his head, and rolled over, breaking his vertibrae. I for one know that i've fallen like that at least a few times, it's kind of scary to think that it can happen so easily. Apparently he wasnt going that fast, and not even that high, it just took that little bit of force. Now he is a quadrapalegic for life, well at least a parapalegic, they're trying to perform surgery to regain use of his arms, but they don't know if it will be sucessful. Just a reminder that sometimes there is more than just being good, or progressing, and throwing tricks, keep it safe too guys. It can happen so easily.

ya, it happens, but dont let that make you into a scardy cat. like you said, just keep it safe, well, as safe as you can keep it.

Yeah, that sucks and none of us like to think about it, but with all these genius scientists we've got, I bet your friend will be skiing again in 5 years.

Girls don't like sensitive guys. Since I don't treat women like objects, I have to treat objects like women.

when i fell on my lower back and bruised my lumbar (sp?) vertebrea i couldnt move for like 10 minutes. it was the scariest thing ive ever experienced.

yea man, that quadraplegic thing used to scare the crap outta me, but then i saw on the news last year about some dude in Israel that was shot twice in the back and it completley severed his spinal cord, and this doctor injected hormones and he was walking again in 2 weeks... so when they start doing that shit in the US then a broken back will be like a broken leg

Thankfully, i have never broken any bones at all. Never taken any bad skiing falls either. (amazing being the i didnt take any bad falls learning rails) But it happens easily on small stuff when you arent being really cautious. My dad tore ligaments in his knee just from a little bump.

there was a lady at snowmass 4 years ago who was going down a blue, and caught an edge in a snowplow and flipped, and she is paralyzed...

Yeah I know, i'm not gonna let it stop me, but i've never even considered the fact that i could be put out of commission for life, it's just kind of a wake up. I'll still be riding as hard as ever, and i know there's a small chance of this happening, but it's still freaky.

I've never been hurt to bad, but have always heard if you start to ski tenative and scared because you are worried you will get hurt is when injuries happen

Yeah, dont freak out, cuz tensing up is really bad. Just flop it up when you bail, thats probably the only reason Im still alive.

I've got a buddy who crashed three years ago, and now he's a parapalegic. He says GO BIG, you can't be scared your hole life.

Why do your skis curve up on both ends?

I've seen so many of my friends go away in ambulances...not from skiing, but from auto racing. Yeah, it can happen, you just have to know it can and realize when it is and isn't worth the risk. You're probably almost as likely to be critically injured while riding in a car on the freeway, so it's all relative.

Go huck yourself.

yea, you gotta just enjoy being out there having fun with your friends while you can. shit happens. and my prayers got out to your friend
