Is there any record of people skiing the gnarly chutes along I-70 into copper?

I drive past em so often and have been thinking some of them could be doable. I am not sure I have the balls to hit any of them, but surely some crazy fucker has hit these?

There’s at least 2 that could be done, and 3-4 that would be insanely gnarly but doable. The biggest issues seem to be 1) getting to them 2) if you fall you die and 3) avalanche risk.

any and all info someone has on this would be great. Rumors, videos, anything.

edit: by into copper I mean the cliffs to the left of you if you’re going south to copper. They aren’t “in” copper.

Ye ain’t got no go pro footage? It’s not for the fame but that shit seems like it would rival 9/10 of the viral sketchy lines you see floating around.

want info. How you got up there and what lines if you’re not bsing.

The Sky Chutes .

Covid cray cray, I solo'd the $

But half way to copper there are ice climbing spots, that aren't skiable , your not considering those...?

Either way, around half way from Frisco to copper, there is a spendable 100' cliff, if the conditions are right.

I'm gonna drop a secret 100' near Abasin, with a couple more spring storms!

Here’s the FATMAP of the region I’m talking about. There’s definitely a few of those without ice that have a few mandatory airs but nothing too nuts. We talking about the same stuff?

The Sky Chutes,

You can access it from Breckenridge... Never done it, touring up from the bottom was easy, spring hard pack stability, clear day. Even Peewee Barilar skied it without the flight for life....

missed summiting peak 5 by a stones throw, but when you are solo, you can't take a single risk past the route...

I'll dig up pics from my archive, it's epic.

Sky chutes is a different zone, not above I 70. There are a number of lines that have been skied in Tenmile canyon proper, many involve ski mountaineering techniques since there are frozen waterfalls (some fine ice climbing early season up there), etc. Not really freeride terrain, but yeah definitely people ski them, although not that regularly with the exception of the lines off Mt victoria and Mt royal. Tricky to line up timing and pretty serious terrain dropping towards I70 from the alpine. You can maybe search up peak 1 gulley (west face), big mike gulley, big tim - a few of these are in guidebooks. Inspiring test pieces for summit county ski mountaineering, always a pleasure to look up there and dream of dropping in!

Id imagine people just take the trail that goes over peak one and just drop in on the ridge somewhere. That trail seems kinda hard for winter tho, even in summer it’s like a steep 3 hour hike just to peak 1

Dean Cummins skied the sickest shit up there right before....

His life was destroyed, forever.

I wanna get the new Jay and silent bob,

Ya dude but imagine the footage if you stomp one of the gnarly lines and don’t end up on Summit Daily?

That would be fucking rad but I think the hike would be harder than the skiing lol idk if you’ve hiked peak 1 but I’m willing to bet it would be near impossible with winter conditions

Ya there’s a trail that literally goes right across top of the ridge of the entire ten mile range

Looks like miner creek will get you up there, and can you leave Breckenridge resort legally and take the Ridgeline?

Yeah yeah, LTE, lol.

I thought the sky shutes were some guys private property. The rumor I was keen to when I lived in Leadville was youd be arrested or shot if you tried them

That was another concern of mine for the area I linked a pic of. Seems like if you trigger a slide or injure yourself you might get hit with charges for endangering the highway or putting rescue teams at risk.

Lots of skiable lines in there. all pretty rowdy. Some require rappeling/ice climbing gear, some don't.

best bet is to climb straight up what you wanna ride, with crampons and ice axe

u could traverse over from breck or from frisco, but the ridge traverse is gonna be gnar, and then finding/dropping your line blind takes a lot of balls, and studying terrain/having good photos

also dont expect to "ride" these lines like a ski movie. probly gonna be hop turning mostly

Cool cool thanks for the input. Yeah I totally agree on that part. Before even thinking of planning an attempt I’m going to take lots of pics, explore the area, ask around etc. Its definitely not a Hollywood line but would be a cool personal accomplishment.

I think I need some legitimate mountaineering experience before I even attempt, along with finding a partner to bring up there with me.

If anyone is interested and has the basic beacon ,probe, and pack, I will take you on an entry level back country day at Loveland pass, Colorado.

From the past you can car lap intermediate terrain.... boot pack up to an open bowl, tour the ridge to venue terrain, the professor. Gangst is filmed in a zone called titty sprinkles, a Ridgeline behind the hippy trees, all of this skiing is insanely legit , from entry level to gnar gnar.
