Is skiing a sport?

Sport-an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature

Using this definition for a sport then yes skiing is a sport as it is a physical activity, requires skill and is often competitive

Whats with all these wannabe philosophical threads lately...

Sport (noun): a physical activity (such as hunting, fishing, running, swimming, etc.) that is done for enjoyment

So yes, skiing is a sport.

If you take this definition, then yes, 100% it is a sport. But, using that definition, then NASCAR, Poker (which is on ESPN), and Video Games (which are in the X-Games) are not sports since there is nothing physical about them besides minor arm movements. Also, by that definition, sex is definitely a sport hahah.

But, if you take this definition "Sport is all forms of usually competitive physical activity which, through casual or organized participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing entertainment to participants, and in some cases, spectators." (Wikipedia)

Using that definition, and focusing on the word competitive, then a sport needs to have a clear objective about what is right/wrong and whatever individual/team achieved that objective the fastest/best/most points/whatever, wins. Now you're into a massive grey area with action sports, particularly on the film side. The point of a film segment is to do things that haven't been done yet, or do familiar tricks in a new way. Ski a new line, hit a new street feature, throw a different trick on a jump, etc. These are feats which cannot be objectively compared to each other, despite all being done on skis. Sure, IF3 can have a panel of judges claim "best whatever" but that is merely an opinion. I'd say film skiing is more art than sport. Taking a specific medium and expanding what can be done using that medium, to me, is art; "The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination."

Very well put together and interesting idea that definitely got me thinking. I wonder how a more traditional artist would respond to this point of view? Thanks for posting man.

Skiing is a mode of transport, that became a recreational activity, that became a sport, and is many things to many people.

Skis were invented I'm sure out of necessity, as were chairlifts, as were helmets.

Look at the artifacts, then look at the needs that were underlying their invention.

I'm sure this forum has become a sport for some... karma, number of posts, time here, views, friends, incoming traffic ... but for most it is not.

Skiing for me isn't.

It's a mindset like skating to simply have the most fun you can with your buddies

Nah man, it's a state of mind. No other sport are gonna make you that stoked, or crazy when deprived. I flow in life just like i try to flow on skis, state of mind bro.

It's not hard to look up the definition of sport; which is "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment." so free skiing isn't a sport but vino skiing is \end thread

That's just like, my opinion man?

All i'm saying is I spend way too much time doing ski related things (pretty much everything i do outside of school and socializing is skiing related) for it to just be a sport. Sure by definition it is a sport, but for me at least it's much more, my life revolves around skiing, not a day goes by where I dont check ns, downdays, or check my skis, workout just for skiing, I think of skiing everysingle morning when i walk to work, no conversation would get me more stoked than one about skiing. Now i have loads of friends who do sports, like basketball, rugby or skateboarding and for none of them it has such a significant impact on their everyday life.

no, you don't score points against an opposing team

if you're trying to define sport, you couldn't be more wrong. Sport just means that something takes a required amount of skill to participate in. Skiing is definitely a sport, but it's up to you to decide whether or not to compete.

Skiing takes no skill to participate in...

I know people who can't catch a football but can stand on skis and go down the hill

Sports have rules that need to be followed and goals to be achieved earning you points...this is not skiing

Just my personal opinion

Your personal opinion is fucking retarded how the fuck does skiing not require skill i know a four year old who can catch a football but cant ski let alone throw fucking dub corks or even slide a rail a sport doesnt need to have teams or points or matches if thats true swimming isnt a sport and tons of other sports. If anyone thinks skiing isnt a sport you should delete your ns and go fuck yourself.

I get everyone has their opinion and thats ok but i thought to have a ns you should be passionate about skiing.

This is totally inaccurate. In competitive skiing you are judged and given a score that is later compared to other competitor's scores and the person with the highest score wins. It's a variation of the definition but still holds true to the basic concept.

oh damn son you just cracked an egg of knowledge over my head
