Is Nick Goepper a bad sport or just human?

Just watched some of the FIS Stubai world cup. After Goepper's first run, he did his classic big air punch thing and spiked his poles into the ground (seemed excited, not upset). Made me think about when he broke his poles over his neck after yelling "fuck" at x games last year. He seems to be one of the only comp jocks that really reacts physically, good or bad. Andri yelled "fuck yeah" in Stubai this year after lacing a run but that's the closest thing I've seen from anyone else.

What do y'all think, is Goepper a bad sport or is he just a normal human with normal human emotions? Do we even care what comp jocks do these days anyway?

I guarantee you the other guys rage too, but are probably professional enough to stay calm for the camera. I was at the Calgary World Cup and some of the skiers were really not happy after Andri stomped a run, but no cameras were on their waiting area. I think it’s just human, these guys put their whole life into competing so losing must really sting.

I remember Goepper snapping his pole on his neck at Xgames, that was pretty hard ngl

If I spent my life training and traveling from comp to comp only to watch Andri win with multiple kfeds in his run, I would probably start losing my mind too.

I met him briefly a few years back at the Snowflex camps (no I wasn't a rich kid, with a coach whos parents send them off to the ski camps, I wrote a paper, asked for a scholarship for the camps and they gave me a pretty good discounted price). Anyhow, he seemed like a pretty chill dude then. Really laid back and genuine, but who knows bc I met him in passing. However, I think comps is all he really knows, and that he's prolly just super invested in it, and expresses his emotions physically.

At the end of the day though, he's a comp jock imo.

that kinda shit is human IMO.

if you have followed Tennis in even the slightest bit you know it is one of the most reserved sports and people are expected to keep it cool. In retrospect though some of the most respected guys in the sport are McEnroe and Agassi both guys that let their emotions show on the court. Not saying Goepper is at the McEnroe level but compared to other sports he is not that wild. I guess in time we will see how people choose to remember him

You must not watch a lot of Slopestyle contests. I can tell you there are a lot worse things kids do that you don't see on tv. Nick is a good sport no doubt. That run he put down was insane, that course is super small and tight so to be able to land so many tricks so quick is a feat in its own. Let alone a run like that. Sometimes you just gotta let it out in the heat of the moment. Id also say there is a huge different between stoke and cockiness. Just gotta make that call yourself. Helps when you know the person.

The dude is in the gym / physio and on the mountain training for I’m guessing 200 days a year minimum

His livelihood depends on his comp runs

Yeah I can kinda understand if a split second error means all that training was for nothing, his sponsors will be watching it and therefore he vents a little

Nick is cool, and a regular guy. His biggest issue is he came up crazy talented and won a bunch of shit at the same time Wallisch was still competing and embodying everything that everyone loved about free skiing and Nick seemed like the antithesis of that.

It was kind of just bad timing. And he did some dumb shit. But, who cares, who hasn’t?

He’s a good guy and he’s grown up, and he’s really competitive. Which to be honest, pretty much all of those dudes are. Nothing wrong with that.

As someone that grew up watching Tanner, Dumont and Cam Riley rage on camera this is pretty tame in comparison IMO.

These athletes spent literally hours and hours on trampolines and basically risk their lives for the podium all for this one event and if things go wrong its understandable to get upset.

It was the first time I did that jump combo in a contest. I was feelin real good all day and super hyped to put down 2 contest runs first event of the year. Yes I spiked my poles out of elation haha. And yes I broke them at X Games like an idiot which I regret. I appreciate the analysis. Maybe I should go back to no poles??

Yes, I am human.

also a heads up to the youngins on here that Nick has been posting good stuff on NS wayy before he blew up on the comp scene. Still reps Jibulant!

I met Nick at a ski shop years ago where he was giving out t shirts and he seemed really chill. His reactions at comps are pretty normal for someone competitive. It does seem like skiers in general are a lot more mellow at events though when compared to other sports.

I love me some emotion. I remember watching you snap the poles on live tv and thinking 'hell yea, that dude is into it'. Respect.

We all love our chilled out soul skiing but the Comps just aren't designed to be that vibe. If you don't like don't watch em.

If you have never been super stoked, or super pissed in a competition then you were never really in the competition to begin with.

Had a very brief exchange on top of the jump line at Breckenridge with Nick one time.

Remember him being a nice classy guy all, "Please, after you. I'm waiting for my friends." With like a nod and hand gesture.

Nothing much, but was good vibes. Knew it was him but didn't call him out or anything.

No need for the microscopic assessment. Make something out of nothing. He's a chill dude in my book.

Hey Nick, props for commenting in this thread and responding to your fans, takes guts to do that.

Also, Nick is a human. Came clean about the rock stuff. Everyone gets emotional when they are competing. Good guy.

its basically emotional highs and lows in sport which we see in just about every sport out there. anyone who has played a sport knows how fucking shitty it feels to put in work and the results just arent there to show for it or lose. it pisses you off.

i would say he was probably upset in the moment. tbh i would rather see someone get upset at their pole after a shitty run than take their anger out on a kids/fans in the crowd cheering them on.

ive seen nick skiing with the squad he rides with on a normal day and he seems like a really nice guy. but comps are alot of pressure and blood sweat and tears. so i understand getting pissed if things dont go good. That being said just shrugging off a bad run is a great habbit to get into as it looks better and feels better
