Is Montana State a shitty school?

So I know there are probably some skiers on here that go to MSU and I wanted to ask: how is it??

the application took me a whopping 15 mins and I found out two days later I got accepted. Are they that desperate for students to attend?

follow up question, should I go there and just fuck around and ski all the time? I know it’s near Big Sky and Bridger which are both dope, especially since Big Sky is on the Ikon now. I’m thinking I’ll probably keep MSU as a safety bet in case U of U or CU don’t work out (god forbid)

Lol the school is fine they just want your out of state cash. As a Washington coastal skier I pretty much froze my fucking ass off out there. Sometimes your car won’t start and your dashboard cracks in half, you can’t unstick your parking brake for 3 weeks on end, you can’t go outside because it’s a high of -10, you can’t bring yourself to go skiing because the wind is ripping so hard they won’t run the upper chairs. It’s a little different game out there.

On the upside you can drink and gamble all night in the bars.

College is a pretty expensive way to just fuck around and ski all the time.

It seems like MSU funnels most of their funding into the Engineering program so if you think you want to be an engineer it could be a good place to be, that being said trying to do engineering and ski a lot is fucking hard and I pretty much lost my mind and have bouts of crippling depression now because of it. I'm convinced that MSU has such a high acceptance rate because they know that a very large chunk of freshman will drop out once they realize that they want to ski more than they want to do school and they want to get that housing money. Like large chunk as in literally half of the people on my homies floor of the dorm dropped out.

If you like pow skiing, Bridger is not the place for you. If you like scaring yourself then it's pretty great. If you like skiing rocks and shitfuck most of the time it is awesome. If you like skiing the ever deceptive coldsmoke on top of refrozen shitfuck bumps its great. If you like park skiing don't even bother. Big Sky used to not have crowds but I've heard it's gone down the shitter since it got on the ikon pass.

Winters in Bozeman can really fucking suck too. I thought I could handle a hard winter, but last year the combination of getting my car stuck multiple times a week trying to get out of my driveway, not being able to ski as much as I wanted to because I had so much schoolwork, nearly killed me via insanity.

Also the dating pool is pretty horrible, so if you are trying to get laid you better be pretty fucking hot and charismatic or a really good skier. If you are actually trying to find a real relationship good luck. You should start growing out your hair now assuming you can pull it off, and only start trying to grow a moustache if you can reeaally pull it off

Ooh yeah can't forget how many people here are straight up alcoholics. Drunk driving is a lot more common than I thought it would be as well, can't count the number of times I've had to plan my late night bike ride home around where I think the least drunk divers will be.

Combat drunk driving: keep the bar open.

It’s not really the college crowd you gotta watch out for, One time I got into it with a cowboy over a bet on a pool game once at the Molly Brown he lost and Just went apeshit- He took the bars cue he was playing with and broke it off on the pool table and refused to pay me. I was like well that’s not a move I recognize and I don’t really want to die over 20 bucks, but the bouncers were immediately all up in this shit and everyone got kicked out or whatever.

I'm a senior in highschool rn, and i toured both msu and CU boulder last weekend. I liked them both, but does any1 have insight on which is better? These are basically my top two schools

I don't know. Ask your parents. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to answer.

lots of big sky locals would shoot you for that.

the ikon fucked big sky. crowds/lines still never were too bad last season, but the rich guests were absolute pieces of shit. like everyone says bozeman winters can suck. Im another person that thought i could take tough winters, but found myself opting to work extra shifts/find a girlfriend rather than skiing on the days it was high of -5. All of those schools are big enough where you can graduate knowing fuckall and having destroyed your liver, or work your ass off and be smart af, its what you choose/make of it. I'd say CU can be the hardest academically, and MSU can be the easiest, but I had a friend at msu that is working with nasa or some shit now, again its up to your personal choices more than anything.

Oh boy, the Molly and the other Barmuda Triangle spots can get wild. Pretty much never go downtown anymore because the dive bar vibes can't be beat.

Damn, that reminds me of a time I was at the Molly and this wasted hick was going to go out for a smoke, and waving around a $10 bill to pay someone to hold his pool table. He waved it by my face so I grabbed it and then he gets all up in my face and is trying to start shit. He then goes to shake my hand for some reason but just latches on with the grip strength of a goddamn gorrilla. He's telling me how I don't want to mess with him and how he could beat my ass, and I was with a bunch of my girl friends and me being the lanky guy I am knew that he totally could and I wouldn't have anyone to back me up. Then he starts to try to pull some moves on the girl standing next to me. So I was pretty confident that he wasn't actually gonna fight me and was just being a drunk idiot so I start egging him on, casually trying to get to the root of why he feels the need to act like this in public and where all of this anger was coming from. Ya know just playing it cool and pretending to be a therapist while my hand feels like it is being clamped in a goddamn vise. Then I made a comment about if he had any problems with his parents not loving him and I could tell I struck a chord and he just let go, turned around to realize that his friends had left because he was being an idiot and then he just dipped. My hand was white and purple. It was strange.

At the Hauf someone tried to fight me when I helped them get up in a mosh pit. What kind of dumb fuck fights in a mosh pit? A previous night at the Hauf there was a concert and it was definitely the typical Hauf underage crowd, kinda felt like I traveled back in time to watch the younger versions of my friends going to see a shitty band. It got pretty packed so I got up on a table to get out of the craziness and then this cute girl, hops up onto the table with me and starts chatting me up. Then this short, dumb lookin, beanie-on-the-top-of-the-head-wearin, stumbling, shitty-gold-chain-wearin, drunk kid fucking punches me in the kneecap and I shove him in the chest out of reflex. I put a big bootprint on his white supreme shirt and he stumbles backward into the crowd and then this girl is laughing at him and grabs and leans onto me playfully. I'm pretty shitfaced at this point and end up falling into the crowd and right onto the dude whose shirt I just stained and is now pissed that this girl has her arm around me. So I help the girl up, and get outta dodge right as a group of people are trying to lift a table on top of the pool table.

The Scoop is the place to be, never had a bad time at the scoop and it's the easiest place to get a pool table. And it's the bar that's most likely to have metal played on the jukebox.

This has been an installment of Barmuda Triangle stories, where cool stories almost happen but don't actually happen.

Watch them scoop the loop right thru the snow Santa looking like a Derby-pro

OP an easy application and quick response time is a good thing. Good schools are looking to streamline the application process and make it easier for students. Some great schools may still have a longer process and turn around time but that is not the sign of a good school.

As far as MSU is concerned I have no personal experience but pretty much any state school is good it's more what you put into it as a student. Also the same classes that the state schools offer for the first 2 years are also usually offered for a fraction of the cost at the community colleges so it can be easy to save money that way

If you want to ski powder and good terrain, MSU. If you want to ski park and sit in traffic, CU

Good terrain? Yes. Powder? Not so much. 85% of Bridger skiing is firm chop, awesome mogul skiing, horrible runouts, dodging rocks, and knowing how to get yourself out of dicey situations. Cold smoke comes around every once in a while tho and it can be fucking glorious if its a weekday and is under-reported.

Everyone is on meth, the skiing sucks, the academics are poor, you'll never get hired out of montana state - just forget it. I graduated from there in 2012 and I'm still bagging groceries. fml.

Sounds great!

Sounds like broke back mountain.

Luckily all the ladies will swoon when I do a shitty kfed

All of my friends from Oregon who went there either dropped out or failed out. Heard the bar scene is fun and the skiing is good, but that's about it.

Looking at similiar schools, I went to SLC last weekend and it was amazing. Really nice campus, cool city, and Alta is some of the most fun shit ive ever skied. My brother goes to MSU and none of his friends wash their pants so take that how you want.

MSU is a land grant university... don't quote me on this but my seminar teacher was telling me about how they can't really turn people down... hence the low graduation rate. People are getting accepted who otherwise wouldn't qualify and get the chance to pursue a higher education. The point here is about providing an opportunity for people who might have the odds stacked up against them. A consequence of this policy is that many of these people don’t make it through... but some of them do. And that’s the point.

I've loved it so far. Dining halls have been recently updated and are hella nice. People are chill. There are so many great resources on campus to ensure your success. Math learning center, $2/hr private tutoring, help groups, drop-in tutoring, you name it.

Bozeman is sweet as well. So, not sure why there's so much hate. Maybe people are just trying to protect the school from even more exponentially growing enrollment. In which case, yeah dude montana state sucks!

God damn I can never find a consistent answer with MSU

Kind of just depends on who you ask.. I love it, all my friends love it. It’s been a great experience.

dont mean to throw anyone under the bus but it seems like a lot of people in this thread are trashing MSU for irrelevant reasons which could all be answered with, yeah.... but that’s not the point of college...

do your own research into the school and don’t let other people tell you how they feel. There’s definitely a plenty of people here who just want to ski and don’t want to do the work, so of course people have hard feelings. MSU may not be a good fit, but if you’re gonna decide that don’t base it off of anecdotes about having to do homework instead of ski pow 7 times a week.

haha i did the leaders edge application like 2 months ago and i heard back literally a day after turning it in without them even seeing my transcript. from what i heard you really get out of it what you put in. can be a great experience for some and a shitty experience for others. so i think next year im just going to go for it and see what happens.

Search bar, we’ve got plenary of threads on this.

that said, I got my BA here and am working on my MA, and work here. Hit me up if you have specific questions.

Wow a reasonable and straight answer to a MSU thread.

I will make some addendum to my earlier, drunken, tongue in cheek posts. To be fair tho the title of this thread is asking if it's a shitty school.

MSU is a pretty average school, comparable to pretty much any other state school. What makes it a great school is the environment and the type of people that it draws. It is a mountain town and people are fit, driven to be outdoors, friendly, and it's easy to use Bozeman's environment as motivation to do well in school. For example my spring semester Junior year I was taking 17 credits of only engineering courses, but I packed my schedule so that I could still ski 4 solid days a week. I think if I didn't have that outlet from school and a group of like minded people around me that are easy to find at MSU I would not have done as well.

A little late but I hated my time at MSU.

Professors were quick to judge and the dorms were strict as shit. I got into the Yellowstone Dorm Complex my freshman year and the staff seemed out to get you in trouble with the law. The campus security wasn't called for noise complaints and or drinking/smoking in the dorms, the staff called the Bozeman police. I saw a total of 7 kids leave my dorm complex in handcuffs for drinking or smoking weed in their dorms. (Weird gripe I know but college is the time for experimenting, fuck going to jail for that)

Academics were chill. The 3rd floor of the library is the spot to be.

I worked at Big Sky and got a season pass for $250 plus a free bus pass to and from. Big Sky is 10 times the mountain Bridger Bowl is.

If you're looking for a less cold (-5 degrees on a warm day) winter and a ski hill that's significantly better than Bridger Bowl, Oregon State University Cascades or Central Oregon Community College in Bend Oregon offers Mt. Bachelor only 22 miles away. I transferred to Oregon State University last year after spending two years at MSU, spent a little too much time skiing so I'll be done with school this upcoming fall.

I'd seriously look into Central Oregon Community College, or Oregon State university as an alternative. They're not "big" schools by any means, but there are plenty of party opportunities and possibly more outdoor recreation opportunities. Smaller class sizes too so perhaps a better education. I've never had more than 20 students in ANY class.

I know it’s not in the discussion here but I went to Sierra Nevada University and had an absolute fucking blast. The school is so chill, so close to skiing, and it’s beautiful. Academics vary depending on program, but there is a big group of well to do people in the surrounding area that can be easy to network with. Jeremy Jones was the commencement speaker this past graduation. So I would at least look into SNU or University of Nevada Reno.

Also, you can gamble and drink literally all night at both schools since they’re in Nevada.

There's pretty much 3 things to do in Bozeman imo: School, drinking, and skiing. It's hard to balance all 3 without sacrificing school performance or time on the hill. In the fall when there's no skiing, it's pretty easy to drink and get school done. The bar scene is def fun as fuck, but try not to be going multiple times a week getting blasted during the winter if you want to graduate in 4 years. I actually had my classes set up last semester where I was taking 16 credits, but only had class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Those 2 days were absolute hell, but I was able to get most homework done during lectures or on one of my off days. I was able to get up to bridger 4-5 days a week and managed to get a 3.7. As long as you keep school as a priority, you can have a ton of fun there, just don't get sucked into going skiing when you should be studying, or going to the bar when you have a class early the next morning. Shit becomes habit really easily.

I don't have much insight on MSU but I'de def recommend the U over boulder. Boulder is 2x the cost to go to a party school and 3x farther away from good skiing. If you're super concerned with partying at the u then join a frat. If not you'll still be able to find a crew and have a blast in the dorms

If you're not set on a big state school you could also look at westminster here in slc
