Is Freeskiing Headed in The Right Direction?

For my college writing class, I've been tasked to write a large paper which looks in great depth analyzing a "Discourse Community"(a group of people with a common interest").

The way I see it, freeskiing is being pushed harder than ever, pushing both style and amplitude of everything. To be considered "talented" or even just "mediocre" at skiing is harder than ever... this seems to be due to 12 year olds trying triples and what not...

but anyways, I'd love to hear how you guys feel about what skiing has become and what you think has in store for the future.

,anything helps

I've been a skier for 45 years (maybe a bit more ;-) ).

It just seems to be progressing to heights I could not have imagined when I was young.

Back then very few skiers could do super rad stuff.

Kinda' like you say. To be considered a hot shoe one must be able to do the most advanced stuff.

That's just the way it is going. See, everyone wants to one up the other guy so they can hold some kind of trophy over the rest.

That's okay, but I still really appreciate any sweet skills even if they are simple.

If one gets too caught up in needing to keep up with the most advanced tricks it may take the fun out of skiing in some way. It may make one feel inferior and that's not any fun.

Let's face it, some skiers will never do the biggest baddest tricks.

To do a simpler trick with steeze, to be on point with each trick, not be falling and getting hurt just to try a triple flip may be a better place to be for most folks.

I don't see any end game in sight anytime soon as there will always be some who want to be considered the best. To hold the trophy. To be viewed as the king. That's okay.

It's going to be interesting to see how it goes in the years to come.

Bla bla bal. My two cents.

I was going to come in here and make a bad joke saying that most skiers spin left, not right, but I felt that I had to help you out here........

Your paper isn't going to make any sense to your professor. Could you stand in front of a group and argue the thesis statement of your paper? Come up with a real argument, rather than "Style vs amplitude"

Discuss the safety vs progression aspect of extreme sports (highlight snowsports industry if you want). Site examples of injuries, death, life changes, career paths, etc.

we can't anticipate where skiing is going, but using triple corks as an example of a change in the ski industry won't make any sense to your professor.

skiing is cool, but refine your argument with a broader group. new articles all the time recently involving mtn bikers who can't pay their bills yet still compete at high level, red bull sponsored competitions. and for what?http://www.vitalmtb.com/features/Op...-How-Red-Bull-Rampage-Changed-Our-Perspective,932?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=fb_like

hope I'm helping without putting you down, but you can't write a college essay about that topic.

Thanks for the input! It definitely will be difficult to compose... The idea of a paper about extreme sports in general was my original idea, but my prof. wanted me to narrow down to one particular sport.

I have to rhetorically analyze the skiing community, so i don't need a factual answer as to explain where skiing head, just generalizations from the community on what people see in the future.

Last time I checked, skiing usually heads downhill. That is unless you're making your way up, to go down.

K, want a serious answer?

Skiing is going in all kinds of directions. Direction also depends on where you're observing from, so I think it's silly to try and define it in a singular way.

Alright let me hone in a little bit then.

Now i know there is a lot of overlap and that there is A LOT more to skiing than competitions and film buut...

From the point of a competition oriented skier where is skiing going and/or how is it changing? and on the other hand, if all you do is ski to be filmed or film, what do you think is in the future?(or even whats changing right now)
