Iphone app

a while back, they said there was one in the making, or at the very least, a mobile version so it wouldnt be so slow. i dont know if it ever went through though.
 
An NS app would only cause sleep deprivation and NS being a medically recognized addiction. Do you really want that?
 
it does, but it would be sick to be able to watch & upload videos/edits, view & upload pictures, etc. and other things you can't do in safari. and it would be another source of revenue for NS.
 
I'm just saying... if well-executed, there's so many possibilities. To the point that an NS app would be the ultimate social networking app -- like a combination Facebook-YouTube-Flickr-etc. app. Imagine the possibilities:

Videos: Watch, Upload, Comment, Rate, etc. plus you could do something cool like shake to show a random video/edit.

Photos: View, Upload, Comment, Rate, etc. plus you could do the same thing -- shake to show a random photo.

News: Read, Comment, Rate, etc.

Forums: View, Start New, Replies w/ Quotes, etc.

Users: Send PMs, Give Karma, View Profiles, Friend Request, etc.

Hell, you could integrate Facebook Connect so that when you request a friend, start a thread, etc. it would show up on your Facebook Profile.

 
All good ideas from ski.the.selkirks. Even if this is a repost thread, it's a good repost. Making an NS app is a massive undertaking. You're essentially rewriting 80% of each section of NS that you want implemented.
 
I forgot to finish my comment:) If you want an NS app, you'll have to keep talking about it. It's a huge investment and I'm sure NS doesn't want to do it, then find out only 10 people use it.
 
ski.the.selkirks is a god.... it would be a big gamble though for NS to make and iphone app but it could really pay off..... but then again it could be a total waste..
 
Very true. It would be hell to try to recreate it all in a visually, technically, and creative way. But it would be rewarding -- like I said, the ultimate social app. The level of potential here is larger than anywhere I've seen.

You'd probably be surprised by how close, for example, videos, are to being iPhone ready. Most of the videos are already available in a compatible format -- h.264. When Apple created the YouTube app, they had to work with Google to recode the videos into h.264. Here a potential developer (possibly) has their work cut out for them (at least in terms of formatting issues).

But would it be worth it? I think you'd have to look at data. For example, out of all users on the site, how many views are generated daily on iPhones? Out of all the mobile views, how many are from the iPhone? How many NS users have iPhone/iPod touches? How many would buy an app for $9.99? It's all about stats.

Say you sell the app starting out for $9.99US. Let's say, just for argument, that 250 members buy the app in the first month of sales. That means, in theory, because Apple takes a 30% cut of all sales, NS would keep $1,748.25. But is that enough? Probably not, but you'd have to assume more members would buy the app. How many active users are there on NS? Run a percentage. Say, 75% of iPhone owning active members buy the app. Would that be more than $1,700?

That doesn't even account for the new people that you'd gain. Although, I don't think you could add that much -- NS is definitely a niche market. Which brings us back to square one.
 
i own an ipod touch and i have some basic algebra skills. plus part of it's common sense. i mean, why would you build a great app if no one's gonna buy it? you've gotta have enough people that'll buy it so that the investment pays off.
 
i would buy that shit sooo quick. it would be ultimate to get first comment on the app page in the itunes store. people would worship me if i did

And I have another feature idea - "Locate". Use Google Maps, iPhone Core Location data, and IP addresses to Locate Local NSers. Drop a pin for every NSer in your area. Say red pins for all NSers and blue pins for online NSers.

The other thing is that I'm beginning to think ads could theoretically offset much of the cost of the app. The only thing is that then the max you could charge is probably $2.99. Then you could sell a premium ad-less version for $9.99.

Think even farther outside of NS's typical functionality. Take a photo of your friend dropping a cliff, post it on NS with geotag information while waiting in the lift line, then switch over to watching a live stream of Red Bull Cold Rush until you get back to the top.

It might be a little bit overboard, but I've been thinking about the "augmented reality" apps that are coming out in September alongside the 3.1 software update. (search YouTube for "iPhone augmented reality" if you don't know what that is). What if you were able to point your iPhone's camera at a cliff or a rail or another feature and instantly get videos and photos for that location by that method as well.
