Interesting quote

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can

only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves

largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority

always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the

public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over

loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age

of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

What do you guys think? Yeah i know there is some controversy over where the quote came from, but it's still an interesting topic.

well the roman empire switched back and forth between democratic and the ceasar didnt they? and all the others were always changing.

its cause voters are fucking idiots. at least in america.

evidence proves that cutting taxes during a large deficit has negative impacts on the economy in the future.

we have two candidates who are promising tax cuts. although one mostly wants to cut taxes to the rich.

its classic procrastinating. "hey so-and-so will cut taxes!" "but we'll have to pay it eventually." "who cares! that's years from now!"

haha its funny that a dem like yourself would say that.
people vote for the person that gives the greatest amount of treasury to them... sounds like free health care and wealthcare

i think the problem is twofold

1. voters in the US are uneducated, so they see something they like in a candidate, maybe a catchy slogan, or a vague promise, and vote, but don't really take the time to think about the candidates

2. i have faith that if all of America voted, we would elect the right person, however, our voting turnouts are terrible, Iraq had like double the percent at their election, so.....nobody cares to votes, and dumb asses elect our goverments

....same thing is true for jury's, we;re supposed to have a fair judgment by our peers, but all the educated people get out of jury duty, leaving drunks and dropouts to decide you court case...not to worried about it now? wait till ur the one up for charges

1. yeah, its actually even worse. voters mostly pick a candidate they like as a person. issues and policies are what's important, not who you'd like to have a beer with. I'd love to hit up a bar with dubya, but that's never going to happen, although I do get to pay his tab for the iraq war.

2. if everyone voted, democrats would win.

1. mainly younger voters that are uneducated on politicians yet jump on the bandwagon because they heard about their politician on entertainment tonight. (obama)

#1 is exactly why the founding fathers formed the electoral college.... the knew some voters...in their case, all voters wont be educated enough to choose the president.... People in this country dont know that are gov't. is a federal republic, which federal meaning that theres separation between lower and higher branches of gov't.(state and fed)...Then Republic is just a democracy that chooses someone to represent them in gov't.

Isn't that quote from the Communist Manifesto reffering to the evolution of government eventually naturally moving to a Marxist state
