Instagram killed the video star ?

how can you be a ' pro ' without a mind blowing video part ?

do we all have such poor attention spans we cant even watch edits anymore ?

how can you make a name for yourself by using over written blogs and instagram ?

we all know what our photos look like before we put them through instagram. for some of you instagram isnt even enough and you need a second party photo editor before posting to instagram. we all know you didnt really have to do anything cool or land a trick to take a decent photo.

instagram pros remind me of y2k

whats ns think

Agreed, but if you judge someone's skiing abilities based off a few insta pictures you probably don't know what you're talking about.

skiing is and running are probably the only two sports that let it fly that you dont actually need to be doing anything that spectacular to get by as being a ' professional '

sports have leagues you need to get through to prove yourself

snowboarders and skateboarders dont give a shit about photos

i mean i guess surfers can get by on photos only

do you think if a baseball player stood around random stadiums in a uniform and had a photographer with him he could convince anyone he was a pro ?

i guess what im asking is are you a ski model, or a professional skier if your only outlet to the sport is generic photographs

Who are these "pros" that are only uploading photos of themselves skiing? Where do they exist?

Can we get some examples of these instagram 'pros'? Cause I have no clue what youre talking about

it's the best way for kids these days to come up , all you need is an iphone and a dope trick and the kidz be tagging their moms and shit.

I don't know about you but if every edit was 12 minutes I'd still watch it.

Instagram can make a unknown skier become known but from what I have seen it does not hurt pro video part skiers who don't use it to it's full potential.

Scrappy Joe uses Instagram well and it helps him gain followers. B-Dog doesn't use Instagram as well and tons of people still watch his videos.

Dude you sound like a doomsday conspiracy theory crackhead thats lost his mind. Where are these Instagram pros you speak of, ive never even seen or heard of this before. Gives some examples or atleast a complete thought instead of random rambling about something that apparently no one besides you has ever heard of

i 100% agree, idiocracy the movie is really happening. attention spans are shortening, everything has to be instantaneous, and long edits are a thing of the past. now a vine video with 4 bangers is what people "like"! even on gram, face book or even ns...film stars will sell 30 second clips on itunes next season...i just started with the gifs, #trending

giving away specifics isnt fun, its like giving answers to the test.

i think what im referring to is more prevalent in 'powder' type skiers.

i love posting up photos to insta as much as anyone, but the people i brown nose to get there include #weed, #headytopper, #donttakeyourselftooseriously

i just think if you want respect from a larger whole of actual skiers and not instagram ghosts post up a fucking edit. clearly your go pro stick selfies and watermarked photos tell me you have a go pro on you 24/7 and you have the patience to be around someone with a camera. its time for some action and less #hashtags and @iblowyou,yougivemeskis types of things

i mean if instagram likes were a judge of your skiing, if i ran a business the only people i would give my skis to are the chicks taking photos of their asses, pussy bulges, and themselves in yoga class.

maybe im the minority

Excuse me, but how far up your ass did you go to pull this shit out?

Holy christ, what are you on? I've never seen such terrible posts. Am I the only one that has no idea what you're trying to say?

Instagram is fucking cool. I know multiple people who have picked up sponsors from instagram. It's I pretty big media outlet and you only need 15 seconds of footage, less if you prefer. I think it's even more relevant in skateboarding where the number of absolute rippers who are unknown is astronomical. That's all my feed is really good skateboarders I've never heard of who rip.

i bet the skateboarders with rad instagrams have sick video parts. its really hard to pretend to be a good skateboarder.

its like a chef on instagram, your food could look awesome with the xpro II and some saturation and cropping, but what if it tastes like shit

It's super easy if someone wanted to pretend to be better than they are through pictures. Like I guess you could stand on a rail and say you did whatever trick even if you didn't. And with jumps, you could do a 5 and claim it was a 7 or 9 Or pretty much anything. is that what you're getting at op?

yea im just asking for some sweet ski edits that make you want to watch the same persons next edit and not those edits with 85% lifestyle / timelapse shots

I'm still not quite sure who you are exactly referring to. You clearly have a handful of skiers you are hating on, who is it?

Just because someone tags a sponsor or hashtags something in an instavideo doesn't mean they're pro? I'm still confused to what your overall "point" is...

If you're a well known skier, you've either won/done well in contests or you've made "mind blowing video parts" either on the internet or in a movie. I'd say 9 times out of 10 an instagram video is either teasing a video part or promoting a link to a video already online.

Your third question seems like a blatant callout of Brody Leven.

And this last part seems to be directed at random kids on instagram you should just unfollow.

What else am I missing here?

i made this same post years before that guy was able to call himself a professional ski mountaineer in an article he wrote about himself on tgr

i have plenty of friends that get skis because of instagram, im just saying they should make some sick video parts and take it back to when keeping it real was the thing to do.

i bet all of my friends (or ex friends after this post) had a sick video part back in the day. why not make another ?

imagine if the dude who started "how to get to chads gap from the bottom of alta" thread posted up a photo instead of video of him clearing chads gap, he did post up a video right ?

i doubt they get skis because of instagram, they get skis because of who they are and the names theyve made for themselves in the industry. theyre just urged to post content online to stay relevant and rep the brand, whether they put out a video part or not though they undoubtedly could. tons of people still slay, they just have other jobs or interests. which im sure youre totally aware of

not disagreeing at all, but when you post photos of yourself airbourne with a go pro on a stick, why cant you show us the edit ? the hardest part of being airborne with a go pro on a stick is the flack you get from your local resort skiing around filming yourself with a stick and not posting an edit

what if mikael dueshdog only posted up photos of his cork 5s and we never got to see the real thing ?

You sound like a fun person.

i think what youre referring to is more of a thing in powder/freeride circles and the oh so loved "protographer" kind of thing. i think people making a name/living/whatever by setting up shots that dont really show any skill is more of a viable thing in the world of skiing that sells shots of some guy or girl slashing a turn that literally any of us could do. park/urban skiing, sure, you could take photos that misrepresent your actual skill level but i don't think anyone in the park world has made a name for themselves with only photos

am i on the right track here? i agree that some of that shit is dumb (like i mentioned above, i'm pretty sick of seeing some slash turn shot that my gaper friends could produce given enough tries in mags rather than shots of people doing sick shit) but on the other hand, in that world of ski media, it could be well argued that the point ISN'T that mr. "pro" is an exceptionally good skier and the consumer is more in it for relatable, interesting articles and pics

my 2 cents

i cant speak for everyone (or anyone) but id attribute that to personal preference or laziness. i for one could give a fuck about watching an edit of someone posting a gopro selfie video of a rodeo 5, but it does make for a reasonably sick still photo. or who knows, maybe the edit is dropping later. instagram is a public forum, so while you may only intend to post a cool picture for your friends, its inevitable that 10k little kids are gonna see it too. basically i think youre reading too far into it, or playing devils advocate and im wasting my time

I think that to be a real "professional" skier, you ski for a living. That's what a profession is, you can't have a day job and be a professional at night. So who the fuck is making a living off of instagram posts of them skiing, and can they please teach me how so I can only spend 1/10th of a day working with a camera and the rest shredding.

I still have no idea what you're talking about. there's no pro skier who doesn't have videos posted of them skiing. Show us a "pro" whos pro because of their instagram photos

Don't even compare baseball to skiing. Just don't

I stopped playing competitive baseball because everywhere I went, the players and my teammates were just big headed assholes. I got into skiing because it's much more independent and you can easily avoid the big headed assholes on the hill. I still enjoy both, just recreationally.

Fully agree on that. I hate the seriousness and the assholes in not only baseball but any organized sport. Just a bunch of sweaty dudes running around trying to achieve the same thing.

And besides not many people actually like baseball anymore. Go to most baseball fields anywhere and they will be deserted
