Injuries

how'd ya do 'em? more interesting to me however, is how you dealt with the mental side of things when it came to recovery.

This is where I'm having some trouble. I'll give a little background.

Last season, I ripped up my left ACL cracked a bone somewhere around my knee and generally effed it all up. It was no big deal, the ACL didn't get diagnosed until November but they told me I was cool to ski anyway, just no park, no moguls... at least I could rip. So maybe a month ago, I'm just ripping down a groomer and kablow my right knee is toasted. I manage, after a long while sitting under the chair, to get up and ski down but I knew I had done some serious damage. I'm still waiting for the MRI results but the doc said it's definitely another ACL tear. So now I'm looking at two repair surgeries that could potentially keep me off snow for two years. I'm kind of freaking out. Best case, I only miss one season. This could (and does, by the way) explain my new and unabated presence on ns.

Anyway, any hard core ski injuries that kept you off snow for a while? How did you deal with them?

I had a partial tear last season and it wasn't super bad, sugery sucked (fuck full leg braces) but I watched a lot of movies and picked up cameras and got into that. I got back to skiing just under 1 year post injury and of course they say no park but I'm back doing spring park but no jumps just rails. My advice.... find a new hobby or get into a relationship or something to fill the time.

I feel for you my condition is not even close to as bad as yours but I'm still off snow. Broke my collar bone last Saturday and am scheduled for surgery at 1pm this coming Monday.. At least I will be able to ride next season.. If I was you I would start thinking of other things that your interested in, things that can get your mind off of skiing. I have acting, movies (watch lots of movies when I'm injured) reading books, try to learn a new language.. Basically anything that is interesting and fun. However sometimes its just going to suck.. I've been sitting around for the past week doing nothing and its starting to get old. Especially when people are telling you to enjoy the down time.. I'm an active person down time kills me..

I guess what I'm getting at is try to do things that will keep your mind active even if your body can't be.

I dislocated and fractured my hip and punctured my lung in one crash when I overspun a backie here in NZ. Put me out for most of my nz home season(only skied 5 days) and canceled my plans to have a season in Canada. With the mental side of things, it can be real shit. I'm not saying its common but I found I had a super bad run of luck following my injury, had a lot of time with my thoughts and went through anxiety attacks and depression, and eventually figured out I probably have mild bipolar. woohoo.Anyway its not a huge deal to me, I know once I get skiing again i'll be happy as, and pot's my friend haha. But major injuries can bring those sorts of mental things to the surface, and apart from that its just being frustrated with your injury that can do your head in.

I ended my season this year with a broken pelvis in two places. sucks, very restricting but I'll be back nxt year so I guess I'm not that unlucky compared to you. I say if you don't play guitar pick it up, or piano or something, like what that kid said about keeping busy. Either way injuries SUCK

Thanks for your responses guys.

I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm going back to school next year so hopefully that will help a little, but I don't know if I can take two whole seasons. That would be the longest I've gone maybe ever, I think I started skiing when I was two.

I hope all of you guys get better soon / stay better if you've already gotten better.

This will definitely help keep me afloat so also, thank you ns.

and any more stories would be nice, misery loves company :)

I was out for all of christmas break, not even close to you, but i played ALOT of Gnarshmallow haha

but seriouslely take up and instrument? Swim lots( isnt smimming theraputic?) maybe learn to speak french??

Get better fast

I had surgery on me knee yesterday, stoked at how things turned out, loooks like ill be fully healed by my season in nz, now just have a few months of super painfull rehab, right now my knee hurts more than any injury ive had, like snapping my leg, but im on the road to recovery which gets me stoked.

what i do to pass the time? i just brought a new laptop, so exploring it, much fun

i was playing soccer the other day and i went ot go kick the ball and i had my foot turned. so when i planted my foot it was twisted jsut right and when the weight came down on it twisted it like a motherfucker. so now i have a torn meniscus and i am out for the rest of the season, and baseball.

oh yeah and a tip to getting out early... do everything they tell you at therapy plus more. set goals everyday and week. that all paid off and I got cleared over a month early

Sucks to hear twin-tip-hero - come up north a little bit and we'll party to ease the pain.

And yeah, my exercises .... ughh, I try, I really do, and my physiotherapist says I'm getting better, but I find all of them super lame. I'm currently trying to find a way to make it more entertaining and I have come to the conclusion that I need more ski movies. Those or a bosu ball.

Hey, any idea where I can find a bunch of 10 minute ski movies, kind of like the Candide Kamera one?

destroyed my leg at the end of 1 season, full leg cast for 14 weeks, crutches for 18, full leg brace for 8. i played xbox, ate ice cream, watched tv, and waxed skis
