Injuries?

I got into park skiing at the end of the 2006/2007 season. During the 2007/2008 season I skied about 30 days, probably 10-15 of them spent mostly in the park.

I still consider myself a complete beginner. I'm comfortable on jumps that put me up no more than 10 feet above the table. I can't yet do anything other than straight airs.

I've just moved up to Mammoth for the ski season. Nearly every day I see people getting hurt in the park.

Yesterday I landed on the knuckle of a jump and bruised my heel. I'm lucky it wasn't worse. A day and a half later I'm not in serious pain when I put light pressure on my heel. On the small jumps I'm comfortable on I doubt a mess up will be too terrible. But messing up and coming down from 25 feet in the air? That has to do a lot more damage.

At the beginning of the season my goal was to be hitting the biggest jumps on the mountain by the end of the season, and be able to do 360s, 540s, etc.

Now I'm not so sure - I don't want to get hurt badly. Lots of the skiers that I've talked to up here are on pain meds, needed surgeries, etc. by the time they are 40.

I don't want to end up like that.

Am I paranoid? Should I just stick to small jumps?

Also, am I in over my head? Am I trying to progress too fast?

I spend most of my time hitting the jumps in South Park at Mammoth (the lip of the take off is around 6 feet above the table, I guess to get to the landing you have to travel about 20 feet?) I've skied parks for about 15 days.

getting hurt is just something you have to accept if you really want to progress your prolly gonna get hurtin a way i guess it makes you into a stronger skier

getting hurt is learning bro. so far ive destroyed both shins bruised thy and hip and jammed shoulder in 4 days. the shins were from casing a 55 footer...twice the thigh was from working on switchups and the shoulder and hip was from trying to handplant a wall and falling 12 feet onto my side. what have i learned? well i learned how to hit the jump and got my switchups stomped. i just still need to work on my hand plants. if you wanna get good keep your eye on the prize and dont worry about the hurting. it motivation not to fall on the nexgt run

taking risks and getting injured is all part of it man.

I don't know too many skiers that are amazing and have not been injured in some way. Whether it be minor or major, its bound to happen.

listen to the guy who said staying loose helps. it definitely helped me yesterday. i overshot a 40 footer and fell about 20 feet and now im sitting in a hospital with internal injuries. haha. im just lucky i didnt break anything. but seriosuly if you know you are gonna get fucked up, go completely limp. the tighter your muscles are, the greater chance you will break something.

i'll add another question to this. How quickly should i be progressing? I just ended my first full day of park only completing a few 1's and not able to complete any rails. Is that bad?

stomp everything. but really, dont do stuff that you aren't feeling, but sack up if you know for sure you could do it but fear is only holding you back.
