Injuries and Rehab?

Have any of you guys recently been injured? Or have any really bad injuries from skiing?

I recently tore my MCL and PCL (actually probably my first real injury from skiing) and coming back to ski this winter but with a brace. Does anyone have any good rehab tips or any other ski related injuries to share?

A few seasons ago I tore my ACL, tore my meniscus, fractured my femoral condyle, and crushed all the cartilage in my knee. It was a bad time. After doing the patella tendon surgery for a new acl, I ended up getting tendinitis, which really slowed down my healing process. My best advice is to work out. Keep getting your knee as strong as possible (safely of course). Not a lot of people tell you the emotional pain that comes with the surgery. I had a hard time emotionally because I was in bed for weeks. It got really depressing. Then being on crutches for months was just as bad. Keep your head up and you will heal. A good PT is the most important. Find somebody who is willing to put your health and strength first.

not ski related, but hinders my skiing, i messed up my knee in rugby years ago, and never went to physio. always go to physio people. i later pulled my back and missed an entire season, i was in physio for a year. you need to find proper exercises to strengthen the area affected. in my case, core strengthening and stretching, and finding if you are over compensating because of your injury.

i think mama ashlaiz is good for answers in this field.

I shattered my femur, snapped tib/fib and partially tore my achilles hitting a tree a couple seasons ago. Ended up not doing real physio because it was more of a bone issue than a ligament issue. Was still as active a possible an made sure to really work on range of motion. The biggest thing is to know your pain threshhold and be able to distinguish between normal discomfort for an injury and hurting really bad because you're pushing it too hard.

In the past two months i've fractured my ankle and wrist. In the past I've fractured my thumb, elbow, and back. Also have torn my ACL and hip flexor.

The best thing you can do is what your doctor says. PT is different from person to person but whatever they tell you to do, do it and do it right. You'd only be cheating yourself by not doing so.

Also, work out other parts of your body. In a knee injury case, that leg is going to weaken to an extent. Before you can start working that leg out again, work out your arms/abs/back. For one, it'll keep you more active and help to keep your spirits up. and two, when you can finally work that leg out, the rest of your body will be conditioned and you won't have to work out your entire body to get back to your original fitness level.

Also, eating well is incredibly important. Your body can't heal to full potential without proper nutrition. I'm not a nutritionist and don't really know a good standard for that. For me I just ate a bunch of fruits/vegetables/leaner meat.

I've had so many injuries skiing. Took my knee to my face gave myself a Black eye, sprained thumb, partially tore my ACL last July, second day skiing last year fully tore my ACL and meniscus and didn't ski all of last winter, second week skiing this year and I have a nice fall and hurt my surgical knee and can't ski for a while again. Biggest thing is to not push it and focus on rehab. Get a good PT, go to the gym, do what you're told by your surgeon/doctor/PT, eat healthy, get another hobby, and don't don't don't push your injury. There is nothing worse than thinking you're better and hurting it again, or worst case, blowing your graft.

Good luck!

Sounds good guys! Thanks for all the help. My physio said I would be allowed to ski next week provided I get a knee brace so I guess it's a good go ahead.

Injuries from skiing are a pain though pahh
