Information on Lake Tahoe Northstar

In September my lease is up on my current apartment and I have been thinking about moving out to Lake Tahoe. Right now I'm just looking around and seeing what I can find out but I thought I would ask here..

I'm just wondering if anyone has an apartment in the area what is the average rent for a 2 bedroom apartment if there are any in the area. Also what is transportation like as I do not plan on having a car there.. Im trying to figure out if I can get a job at the mountain so if anyone has worked there before how is it (other then the skiing)?

Lastly I was looking around on craigslist but can't find the northern tahoe page so if anyone could help me with a link or something that would be awesome! Yes I searched.

take it easy

North lake tahoe gives you a few options as to where to find a place to live... Truckee, Tahoe City, and Kings beach are probably your best options closest to skiing, and where to find affordable housing though.

If you dont have a car, there is a bus system, the TART, but it can be a bit slow sometimes in winter, so catch it earlier than you normally would. I'm pretty sure they run to at least squaw and northstar bases...

Hitchhiking is another common thing to find up there... I cant tell you how many times this winter I picked up a chilean or a random kid from michigan, or kiwi or whatever, hitchiking because they just moved here seasonally and obviously dont have a car. I would take advantage of it only if you cant get a bus though. Its a long walk soemtimes and you might not get too lucky. Also, I think nevada doesnt allow hitchhiking, so if you get a place on the nevada side, like Incline or stateline, or something, beware of that.

South lake tahoe is a bit larger area and might have more options - also heavenly is always hiring, and the base is right by the highway so its real easy to get to. they have a shuttle bus system that goes to the resort there as well. There is also skiing at sierra and kirkwood down there, but they are a bit further, and i'm not 100% sure on the transportation to and from those places if you dont have a car.

On craigslist, you go under california and click on reno/tahoe area, and it gives you the broad region... unfortunately i dont think there are specific ones for so. lake and no. lake, so I would just look around for that stuff. Maybe look into getting a job at a resort where they have employee housing and such.

either way. good luck. Tahoe's an awesome place to be.

Umm... well you just about answered 99.9% of my current questions. Thanks a lot for the help it will make the search a lot easier. +k

I would like to point one thing out, South lake is a fucking worthless shit hole. It sucks unless your going sledding. Id rather live in Vegas, and vegas sucks pretty bad.

Haha, oh come on KC.. you live in reno...

That said, i still like northlake a hell of a lot better as much as skiing's concerned...

sierra meadows is a good central, neighborhood in Truckee to check out, and all the public transportation drives right by.

yup. sierra meadows is a really good spot to live. Close to northstar, shopping, downtown(bars), public transportation etc...

But, i would recommend getting a car. I never can understand why people move out here and dont bring one, it really limits everything you do. Resort jobs typically dont pay very well and they all around suck, so having a car means you can drive to better jobs. Also, northstar opens late and closes early, so you are basically cutting your season short. You can typically ski from october to july in tahoe, and if your gonna try and rely on public transportation, thats not gonna happen. Getting to places like squaw and boreal and kingvale is a pain if your riding a bus, and reallllll hard if your planning on hitch hiking.

My advice? get a car, find a real cheap place in reno, and commute.

I would second the notion IF it's affordable...

If you can spare like 700... 800$, you surely can find an old Jeep Cherokee or Subaru or something in at least running condition that you can beat around in for at least a season... That's what I've done, and it's worked out well so far. Just put it on your parents insurance, and give it basic liability and you're golden...

You wouldn't actually have to drive all too far anyway... Reno being the furthest thing, and it's only maybe 35 mins from Truckee as it is... so it would probably work out okay.

If you want some nightlife look at Tahoe City. If you want pure skiing sexytime and don't mind dealing with tourists and rednecks look at Truckee.

way more to it then kings beach. Climbing gym, good community center with a big gym, pool and everything. And better/more restaurants, Bowling alley, I have not been, but I've heard it gets pretty fun wednsday night, games for a dollar or something. Deals on beer I think to.

No, I'm from there. I dont live there anymore though lol.

Not dissing reno. Just saying its not directly on a beautiful blue majestic lake haha.

And I'd rather live in Kings Beach or TC, and then go to Incline when I feel like it, rather than live that much further from skiing.

I'd much rather live in Incline than KB, but this is really besides the point. For him, the best bet would be Sierra Meadows because its closest to Northstar.

definitely agree about sierra meadows.
if you want to live in a mexican shit hole ghetto, then live in kings beach.
incline sucks dick if you are poor. its full of rich snobby kids and tourists. nightlife sucks, IVGID sucks, bowling alleys sucks, rec stuff is ok..... but people from incline have a wack as mentality that they are better than everyone else.... and there are a butt load of dirty mexicans there as well

Word, I agree with everyones point in here. Except Sean. Reno is tight. Im 10 min from the mustang ranch FTW.

Kings beach is way better then incline in my opinion, like said above every body has the whole "if you havent lived here your whole life you dont deserve to be here" attitude My buddy just moved into a house in kings beach and it is awesome, neighbors are super chill, plus its like 10 minutes closer to northstar than IV

I would highly recommend buying a car. I worked there over the winter (and going back next winter) and not having a car is a real pain in the ass sometimes. Especially at night. No TART after about 6pm. Although there is a free bus at night that stops at about 11pm. Some things can be pretty spaced out. For example if you live at Kings Beach, if you want to go ski Squaw or Alpine you have to get 2 buses.(KB>TC, then swap @ TC to get on the TC>Alpine/squaw bus)

Also, i would recommend living in tahoe city. I lived on the West Shore and ended up sleeping on my friends couch in TC half the time because the bus stops so early. Another thing is that if you want to go out drinking TC is better as you are probably walking distance from home/town & bars.

Tahoe is sick, you'll love it out there.
