Full article can be found here, but this surmises it well.

President Obama, no different from his predecessors, is particularly well versed in how to use the theater of politics to his advantage. Consider that amidst the cacophony of the fiscal cliff debates, the president signed into law two pieces of legislation, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendments Act (FISA) and the National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 (NDAA), which further erode our most basic constitutional rights by reauthorizing sweeping police powers to be used by the federal government.

FISA allows the federal government to spy on Americans who communicate with people overseas, whether they are journalists, family members, or business associates, while the NDAA reauthorizes the military's ability to indefinitely detain American citizens, a provision which first reared its head in the 2012 NDAA.

While the invasive powers bestowed upon the federal government by FISA and the NDAA should be cause for alarm, they have become part of the unchallenged post-9/11 paradigm that disguises itself as representative government today. This matter-of-fact, all-in-a-day's work erosion of our freedoms is no less appalling than the routine, relatively uncontested renewal of legislation, passed without debate or question year after year, which flies in the face of every fundamental principle of individual liberty on which this nation was founded. Such is the political playbook being used to chart the nation's course these days.

Inb4 a bunch of children who don't understand anything.

Also not surprising at all. Bush wasn't even the close to do it although the PATRIOT act was pretty groundbreaking in one it straight up legalized.

The fact that people keep voting for these clowns makes me wut.

To the kid who say's "you must be doing something wrong if you're scared of being detained". That's not the issue. It's the erosion of liberty.

People will call me unpatriotic and say I'm a horrible person/American for not supporting the wars we're involved in. At the same time those people support presidents like Bush and Obama that are really destroying everything good about this country.

I don't doubt it, there are plenty of sites/blogs out there saying it's happening, but they have names like "muslimobama" and "impeachobama2013"

not to mention that a police department would not be able to independently declare martial law

If the website is info wars or prison planet it isn't reputable.

There really is a lot of fucked up legislation though. If our government doesn't like somebody, they can label them a terrorist and hold them in a secret prison, not even tell anyone they took them, no trial etc.

Too people who say that will never happen. Our government kills people all the time. They label somebody evil or a terrorist and we go and kill them.

YEA MURICA

what scares me is all of the behind the scenes shit…you and I both know (like you said) there is tons of stuff that happens on a daily basis that is not made publicly known because it's super sketchy and/or illegal.

What's also annoying is that when sketchy stuff does leak (not trying to start a shit-storm…just stating my opinion) like the scandal on Benghazi and other things…then there are elaborate cover ups and media ploys to trick people. It's annoying, and disheartening that the leaders of our "free" country hide things and straight up lie to make everything seem ok.

Perfectly timed around the Fiscal Cliff bullshit like the article said. I had a feeling there was more to that than a bunch of politicians trying to solve the budget issue. Seems almost like an engineered distraction. Inb4 it's a conspiracy guy

Thats not the point. The point is that it is clearly unconstitutional. If the constitution can be flagrantly violated for the sake of convenience for law enforcement then there is no point of even having it.

Both the Patriot Act and the NDAA are uncalled for, unconstitutional, and all around unacceptable. Why can't people realize that we are throwing away our civil liberties in the name of unnecessary counter terrorism. We are brainwashed to believe that America is full of these creatures known commonly as "terrorists" and that our neighbors, friends, and even mothers all might be terrorists. Its fucking ridiculous and it leads to unnecessary racism and paranoia.

Out of all the muslim people you've ever met how many of them have been involved in terror attacks? I've met quite a few and so far my answer is 0.

Irrelevant, at it's core it's a violent hate-filled religion.

Read the Hadith, read the 9th Surah of the Qu'ran. Muslims aren't reasonable people, and the ones that are just aren't observant.

Extremists aren't reasonable. Do you judge all christians off of the Westboro Baptist Church? You can't let the views of the outspoken minority stand in place for the views of the silent majority.

Quranic abrogation or Naksh says otherwise. The 9th surah is more important than all the other surahs in the Qu'ran. You're actually a bad muslim if you don't abide by it.

Abrogation didn't exist in the bible, which is why christians can be like yooooo fukk da old testament..it was a different time yo.

In a long time? What obama is doing is continuing the shit bush did. What bush did just legalized the stuff clinton and others were doing illegally.

And all the presidents have been racking up debt, the feds been printing away.

We haven't had a good president in a long time. The reps will blame it all on obama, the dems blamed it all on bush.

And so this 2 "side" bullshit system will keep rolling perpetually, every 4 years we'll elect a president, things will keep getting worse regardless of which "wise" get's in, and people will bitch that it's all the other sides fault while America goes down the tubes.

Stupid people are killing this country.

bam. At some point this two headed monster has to come to an end. I just wonder how messy its gonna be when it does.

You hit the nail on the head mang. I completely agree that since our foreign interests have shifted towards the middle east, terrorism has arisen as a crutch for our foreign involvements. Since 9/11 people have been reluctant to question our government and it's still the same way JFK's speech on Secrete Societies:

obama and romney are the same dude. They are the "winners" selected by those you don't see. One is picked and would have been picked no mater what the votes totaled. Republican and democrat doesn't mean anything anymore at least in the big picture. The last genuine president I believe we had was Kennedy.
