man i havent used it in forever but im pretty sure to fade in or out you have to choose the fade in/out effect from effects and then use it/modify it. for audio i think theres a box near the timeline you can check that will allow you to see the audio levels... once these appear just click on the line to make a point, then use two or more points to make a fade. sounds confusing but its mad easy and intuitive
