So I just got in a Gh2, right now I'm confused as fuck on how to use it. I'm reading lots on how to work it but still have a few fairly dumb questions.. Hoping those that have one in M&A could help me out by answering them.

1. Is Manual Movie mode 24p? Or can i change the frame rate? (If so I havn't found where in the menu to switch it.

2. HBR, do I need to be on if I want the hack to work?

3. 24p cinema, Is that the option you guys use mostly?

4. Variable Movie Mode.. Its all in percentage, how do I know what the actual frame rate/ whether it's in progressive or interlaced?

5. How do I know the hack worked? I install the Cake hack, no menu's have change or anything though, but I followed a video on how to do it and everything was done how it was in the vid.

6. Is the hack like magic lantern? If I take the card out does that mean the hack is no longer on the camera?

7.I.R? I.resolution, always keep it at high? Or off?

8. What are the all the settings you use and find work for you best?

9. Cake hack vs. the others. What do you guys use? I read the threads about them but I do not understand what they are talking about, GOP? Intra? words like that.

I'd be awesome if I could get these answered. I wanna learn to use this camera to it's fullest ability.

Thanks guys,

Kalum

I'm on mobile now, I can post more details later if you need tho. I film mostly on 24p cinema , and as far as I know, variable movie mode is over/under cranking the cinema mode. Right now I use the mustering hack, you can tell if it works by looking at the files, both size and quality. GOP is group of pictures. I like GOP one be ause it means that each frame is an individual picture. Gives awesome detail and good for motion at the cost of huge files. I like to keep most of the stuff turned off, like iDynamic and iResolution, and I'm still looking for my ideal settings for film modes. The hack does stay with the camera, you can format the card or even use a new one and lastly hbr is a slightly higher bitrate at 25 or 30p depending

Depending on your country. I can't remember off the top of my head about manual movie mode. I have everything set to the custom modes. Reading the manual is in redibly helpful, it can explain it better.

use 24p cinema, and if you want 720p60, use the 720 selection in the menu.

You'll know cake worked based on quality, file size, as well as all of your ISO should be unlocked.

I set it to manual movie mode, set up a baseline (smooth picture style with everything turned all the way down, cinema mode, a standard ISO and frame rate) and then go to the menu and set it as one of the C (1,2,3) settings. C3 is my 1080p24 and c2 is my 720p60 baseline. It makes it way easier.

You'll also know the hack worked when you go to grade it..... unf.

Also, hack does not work like magic lantern. I replaced my card and eveything still works perfectly

Thanks for the help guys! I'm starting to figure it out. I'm using the 'Nine' hack right now but a wedding i am shooting soon I will use Cake or Flowmotion.. Span on slower cards?

I graded some footage and it is unreal, it blows away my old t2i footy. And the shadows are alot less muddy then with Canon cams I'm finding.

Super stoked on the Gh2! Wish I made the switch earlier

Avoid those uber high-quality patches for weddings. The more demanding it is, the more likely something will go wrong (spanning, glitching, slow recording). I've found Cake to be super reliable and have amazing results, though there are many other good patches out there that I haven't tried. Experiment and see what works for you.
