a lot more pics at the link..

i've never been a HUGE VW fanatic or anything. but as i was looking for a new car to purchase, i came across this and it really caught my eye.

thoughts?

get it checked out by a mechanic. they will give you much better advise than 15 year olds who read headlines in their dad's road & track magazine.

thanks.. i just moved here, so i dont really have any mechanic friends..

so just test drive it and bring it to a shop? or??

go to a local mechanic/autobody shop, find a mechanic ask when he is free, pay said mechanic some money to come check out the car, then go from there

I wouldn't buy any car that's 20 years old without someone who knows what they're looking at taking a look at it. Especially with German cars it could end up being a money dump for parts and labor. Looks pretty cool though. You must know someone who knows a thing or two about cars?

or tell the seller that you want to get it checked out by a mechanic so you can be more confident in your purchase and offer to let him come with you so he knows you are coming back.

in like three other states i do..

i dont have any one here that i know..

i know my fare share about cars, but since it is a german car and what not, it could very well end up being a money pit like said above..

also, the kbb on it says like 2grand in excellant condition. so thats why i think its over priced.

and he just has it that high because its a VW.. and in california..

Do you know the maintenance history? I think it's a 16v but I'm not sure , I don't know my VW motor history as well as my Audi motors. I wild want to make sure it's up on all the standard stuff but it looks potentially like a good buy. The breadbaskets are fun little cars.

2500 is more than i'd pay. looks to be in good condition, but you never know. i'd take it to get it looked over at a reputable shop and compression checked at the least. old VWs aren't my thing...

you can get one in good condition from a legit dealer for like $800 this is def a ripoff unless hes added a lot, but from what it looks he hasnt done much, id check it out with a mechanic drive it and offer him around 800-1000

all of the advice about getting the car checked out by a mechanic is definitely a must do. But as far as how good of a car in general it is, I've heard very good things about little 2 door hot hatch VW's. Very fun cars to drive. Only thing is, if you're planning on driving it in the cold, it might not be that great especially because it's fairly old

It is hard to find a mechanic...but I would say the normal way that I have always had work for me is to throw em 20 bucks to check it out for you, and kind of bounce ideas off of them.
