not really, but check this edit out. lemme know what you think. Tried to do some new shit in this edit...

dude that was So sick! Colors seemed a little flat or bland at times just a little, and also you got some snow on your lens obviously lol I was shooting yesterday with the snowmakers on full blast at my resort, it was terrible. Just my 2 Cents, btw u got your ace?

I was wondering how a pink name could get pregnant then I remember this documentary. This I was dissapointed.

You could have framed some of the tripod shots better, the skier was cut off in most of the shots.

IMO I think it's fine to do that. In regards to rails I think it looks unique to cut off from the head/torso. I figured it was more preference

Well from a broad standpoint you really need to work on composition. A lot of the shots had some great potential with a touch of reframing.

You also should be wary when you're cropping to that cinemascope aspect ratio. You were cropping off heads which just looks weird and sloppy. If you work in FCP you can easily apply a 2.35:1 crop and bring your footage down to avoid the awkward beheaded body and have more precise framing.

Everyone and their mother is using Apollo Brown in edits, which I have absolutely no objection to.

I dig it, the colors seems a little funky, but I still enjoyed it.

bump

In regards to everyone saying it's bad composition to cut the tops of people off in the frame, I honestly don't think it's bad. I've seen quite a few edits that crop out the torso/head but keep the skis/legs in frame. In my opinion it's an okay look.

It's a serios composition no-no and if you didn't cut off with your 2:35 crop you wouldn't have had the problem. If you're going to do a 2:35 crop, shoot for it, make marks on your lcd/viewfinder so you don't cut off peoples heads. I know you think it looks okay or unique but to be blunt, it looks extremely amateur. A lot of edit that have cut off heads/torsos are very amateur and to 99% of any above average filmer (photog too) see it as a major composition issue. It just a rule of filming, if you wanna keep doing it then go for it, but it looks terrible.

Agreed. If you want to chop off body parts, you need to do it in the appropriate places. Your portrait shot (what is it called in filming) is okay, where you chopped off the top of his head. But certain places on the body throw everything off. Like where the skier hits something and his whole head is chopped off. Places like neck, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles etc, are not places to make that crop. If you do it, it has to be done perfectly and with purpose, otherwise your subject looks like an amputee.

Also, the irregularity with audio was throwing me off. Keep it consistent through the whole edit. And one last thing, this new crop cinemascope or whatever it is, yeah it looks nice but I don't feel like it worked for this edit.

Hey, but I mean props for trying out some new things. Just gotta tweak em around to see what works best for you and what will work best for your edit.

seemed like you were too far away on most of the followcams, and too tight on the stationary shots. find that middle ground

2.35:1

and personally, i kinda hope people stop doing it. i love it in narrative stuff, but honestly i just don't feel like it has much of a place in skiing. i can't say i've seen a ski edit yet that was uploaded at 2.35:1 that i wouldn't have rather seen in 16:9. just has to be so wide if you want to fit a whole person into the frame, resulting in cut off torsos in most of the videos i've seen. It can be done very well with a tripod, but just doesn't seem to work that well with glidecam stuff especially.

other than that, i really liked that edit mike. i liked the sound a lot (although it was a little too loud at times) and a lot of your angles were super dope, loved them.

Got inspired by Stept.

Decided to give it a shot.

Failed.

Think imma stick with 16:9 for now.

i wouldn't say you failed at all really, i just personally don't believe that 2.35:1 is great for skiing.

as much as i love stept videos, i even wish they would stop doing it.
