I'm moving to Hokkaido

I'm not sure how many people regularly check in on this regional, but I'm gonna say hi. Is there a cult for Japan, or Hokkaido specifically?

I'm moving to Hokkaido in August, and should be there for a couple of years. I'm going to be just north of Sapporo but am planning to travel around as much as possible at weekends, and for night skiing.

Anyone based over there? Any hidden gems other than the obvious major resort areas? Any tips? Would be cool to meet up with any NS'ers!

planning on being in Niseko again working for Niseko 343 in Hirafu. stop by and say konnichiwa if you have a chance.

Hey man, thanks. I'll no doubt find myself in Niseko a few times over the winter, I'll be sure to stop by the store.

It's starting to get a little cooler here now, only a couple of months until snow!

I teach English here. So that admittedly cuts down on free time to ski. But it means I have a good salary, a nice place to live, a car, plus weekends and a decent holiday allowance to travel around the mountains. Plus my town has two smallish hills with nightskiing and basic parks that I plan to hit after work on weeknights.

Hey,
We are hosting a Poorboyz "Revolver", MSP "The Way I See It" and Sandboxland "Now You Know" Parties for the next three weekends beginning October 6th each Saturday at Booty Disco in Sapporo. It's free and you're welcome to join!clayton@bdlodge.com

planning on moving there next year and staying as long as they will let me... but I will probably be in Wakayama for the first year. how did you get a drivers license there?

I'm doing 3 weeks based in Niseko in Feb with 6 others from New Zealand. Keen beans to meet up with some NSers for some fresh tracks if anyone will be there and keen for a jam!?

You can drive for a year on an International Drivers Permit. After that, you need to have it converted to a Japanese licence. If you're from Canada or most European countries, this is just a matter of a few forms, some money, and proving you held your licence for more than 3 months before you arrived in Japan. If you're from the US, unfortunately it means quite a tough written test, and I think it costs more too.

Good luck with moving to Japan. What are you planning to do for work - teaching?

thanks! yeah for the first year I'm planning on teaching at a school where I have connections. after that I might teach skiing, find an office job, or go to grad school and get into translating. basically I'll go wherever life takes me.
