On wednesday I will be witnessing Avicii Live at the Great Salt Lake! I have never been to a rave before and have no clue what to expect. Im super stoked! Is anybody else here going?

me and my buddies will be there too. I'm expecting lots and lots of underage women seeing as it's Avicii.

What you should expect: Drugs, flashing lights, drugs, loud music, oh and did I mention drugs yet?

Haha you are going to have a blast then. Raves are super super fun and girls are way horny. Just be ready to see some really fucked up people haha.

I live in a little town called cottonwood heights, I've seen more then my share of fucked up people shouldn't be two different, Could you tell me like how the water works? is their fountains or do you just have to buy waterbottles there?

Buy water bottles there. Just refill them in the bathrooms, no water fountains or at least I have never found them the past couple times I've been to the Saltair haha.

I don't know why everyone is saying it's not going to be a rave. Don't worry buddy trust me it will be. I'm by no means a hardcore raver but I have been to enough to know this one is going to be fun.

Avicii might be main stream but SLC has a GREAT rave scene. I went to "rave" in Denver and damn was it drastically different. People were actually dressed normally and there were a lot of very wide eyed bewildered adults wondering what the fuck they had gotten themselves into.

no sir. i sarcastically misspelled because of a lack of respect for him and the music he "produces." but thats neither here nor there.

DISCLAIMER- i am not a 'raver' nor do i claim to ever gone to one. but...

a rave is "An organized underground party involving music and dancing. Raves typically involve one or more DJs playing electronic dance music such as techno, trance, breakbeat, jungle, and ambient. Usually starting after dusk and lasting through 'til dawn, drug use at raves often runs rampant; particularly the use of Ecstasy and LSD. Raves can vary greatly in size and scope, hosting from dozens to thousands of guests, and lasting from one night to a few days. Classically, ravers have maintained a strong community spirit and have promoted an ideal called PLUR, an acronym for Peace, Love, Unity and Respect. These values have unfortunately faded somewhat since the onset of a newer generation of ravers unfamiliar with these concepts so elemental to the original scene."

what you will be attending is a pop concert with a bunch of sexualized high schoolers consuming drugs because its the "cool" thing to do nowadays. (generalization)

not hating on you by any means (im sure it will be a lot of fun) but the whole "scene" is a little ridiculous and out of control if you ask me.

Tell me how Avicii is not electronic dance music?

Your just saying it's pop because it's sooo mainstream. Don't get me wrong Avicii is not my favorite music to listen to but I find that the electronic music I listen to and want to go see at shows are very different.

When your listening to music on your ear buds the light show or experience is never a factor. I know there can be super awesome small venues that play through the night but big headliners bring in big money and big sets, which in my opinion are awesome!

never said it wasnt 'edm'. my problem lies with the fact that its become extremely mainstreamed (but im not a hipster lol) and you're not cool if youre not raving and rolling by the time you graduate middle school. i have NO problems with drugs or ppl that do em (fuckin drugs are great), i just dont think we should influence/pressure the youth into thinking this is acceptable or cool.

Neither Avicii nor his music pushes youth into thinking that is acceptable or cool. The "scene" does that. You can't attribute the scene to his music, regardless of how popular it is. That scene would exist even if he didn't.

yo, take some fucking E. grind the fuck outta a bitch in the crowd and slam that shit later on. like you'll give a fuck. #overit #fa$$otyoloshit #whatever.

but srsly, went to some paint rave and it was killer. railed a chick on e. def recommended. live it up. have fun. use a fucking bag.

dude quit using straw man. i dont like avicii because i think he is a cocky douchebag with little talent. that being said, of course he does not support these trends, however i doubt he is doing very much to stop them.

i do not feel like arguing about what societal values have pushed this younger generation, towards this 'scene.' but it is not acceptable.

I don't think that was straw man; based on what you'd written, it was your side. I inferred that "your problem" was with Avicii, not EDM or whatever was implied otherwise. My bad, misunderstanding I guess.

I don't disagree with you here. I don't know if he's cocky, I don't know if he's a douche. Whether he has talent or not, at least on my level of familiarity with music, is a matter of opinion. But you're right, he's not doing much to stop these trends. Then again, neither is anyone else. It's making them money.

if cottonwood heights is a bad place to raise kids what would you consider a place like LA to be? the 2nd circle of hell?

Im on mobile at the momment so I don't know. But it's chill, not really folk music, just like sick alt music. I mean lmfao is headlineing blues fest so event names are dildos now

i agreed with pretty much everything you said up untill that..

yes i do know what an "actual" rave is, ive been around for that and decided it was fucking stupid.. and unless you live near or in a major city you just have no idea.

but you cant disrespect avicii just because hes popular, you should almost respect him more because of that. think about it, if you like electronic music, there is almost nothing better for the industry in all aspects then popularization, and if i wanted to "convert" someone to likeing edm i would throw down some avicii if they havent heard it already (im talking at least a year ago.) but right now we are in a transformation of the genre, and if you think about it its a good one because in my opinion at least (and ive been listening to electronic music for a while now) the good music is popular. last time i checked that was the main argument for disliking anything mainstream... that it wasnt fully superior and you arent being "tricked".

this transformation is all part of a plan, this music is the music of our generation, just like how our parents like the popular music that was emerging at their time. (woodstock and whatnot) history is only repeating itself and its coming from a pretty shity scene. the same way how when rock music was emerging it changed from blues and other underground shit.

yeah i know the current scene is not at all what it used to be, even in terms of the definition of a rave, but you are just going to have to get with the program, grow up and accept that edm and electronic music is changing and more epic than ever, and it going to be ok with regards to the perspective you have (i used to think that way too thats where im coming from)

lol nope...slc has a rave scene of confused judgemental 16 year old girls. San Francisco, now that city has a GREAT rave scene.
