You have to be 16 to get your permit in NY, then 6 months of driving with your permit you can take your road test. I don't know where you're getting 18 from.

YES. All my friends say that because I generally disregard the speed limit (by a lot), even though I've never been in an accident, and never drive too fast for the conditions. There's a difference between fast and dangerous, like I never go over the speed limit in downtown/congested areas and limit myself to 40ish in other parts of the city.

Also, none of these friends can even drive my car, because only about 10% of them can drive a stick.
 
I would just like to say that i was driving a few days ago with my father and there where 2 lanes. the left lane being a Right turn lane onto the main road and the left being a straight and left turn lane with a gas station on the corner right next to the right turn lane. the left lane was backed up with a bus in it. I was going like 20 mph in the right turn lane and this dumb bitch comes turning through the left lane of traffic accross my lane to get into the gas station and i didn't see her because of the bus. i didnt have time to stop and t boned her going like 10 mph. Nobody was hurt and we pulled into the gas station to talk and call the cops. She said the joker in the left lane signalled her through and she didnt even just went pulling right in front of me. she was trying to tell me the road was only one lane. anywho our front bumper hit her front tire on the left side. We have litterally no damage. Not even a scratch but we fucked her tire royally. Her tire was bent in and shit. LONG STORY SHORT: 1. Subaru bumpers kick some major ass 2. Be weary of driving quickly next to a stopped lane that somebody would turn through. 3. Dont trust other people that signal you through a lane. 4. always carry your license driving. (i didnt have mine but the chic didnt notice so my dad said he was driving)
 
I question on how many people clicked on this thread and were thinking "dude I am going to show this fucker up I am way better at driving."
 
i actually find myself justifying why people are going so slow.

everytime i pass someone i look over and think "oh, it's a _________" (woman, asian, elderly person, young kid...literally any possible person)

And an important lesson to learn is the difference between speeding, and going too fast.

You shut your whore mouth. Manual > everything. I dread the day I have to drive an automatic. Anyone who thinks driving a manual is a pain in the ass or difficult for daily driving is a huge fucking pussy. It really upsets me that most cars come with DSG shit now instead of a standard transmission. All I want to do is shift my car, not pull a god damn flappy paddle. I will drive manual cars until I either physically cannot anymore, or cars simply do not come with the option for a manual.

For once I actually agree with you. I drive one in Duluth, which is probably the worst city ever for one, because it is situated on a steep hill. With stop signs every block. People are always like OMG ISNT DRIVING UP LAKE AVENUE HARD FOR YOU?!?!?! and I'm like lol no, I just set the parking brake when I stop, and I dont have to ride the brakes like a retard every time I go down the hill.
 
Lolwut? You should not have to set the parking brake to drive up a hill from a stop. Learn how to properly drive a manual.
 
you have obviously never stopped on a steep enough hill. you dont actually let it click, you hold the button down so you can drop it as you let the clutch out.
 
I've been driving a manual transmission for 9 years. I've never needed to pull the E-brake to start on ANY hill, and trust me, I've been on "steep enough hills". Who the fuck taught you to drive a stick?
 
Im a good driver to the extent that me and my friends are kinda dangerous we race in town, drift everycorner, speed, but i got two speeding tickets, thank god photo radar doesnt affect demerits or else i would have had a suspension!

Mind you, in driving school we perfect both handbrake and simple clutch hill-starts, at least with trucks with really heavy and skiddish clutches and in older cars with loose clutches it definitely doesn't hurt to help it with the handbrake.
 
Just remember the trifecta of bad driving:

1. Old

2. Woman

3. Asian

One of the above and it's a bad driver, two and its a shitty driver, three and you're clusterfucked.
 
lolno. I've witnessed my grandpa race and beat multiple ricers, its amazing. As for the manual vs automagic debate: auto is boring as shit, I will always drive manual.
 
It irks me when people tell me they're better drivers than me, but it irks me even more when people assume that I'm a shitty driver because I'm a girl. Um no, I can drive a plethora of commercial vehicles, and tow a 7 horse trailer with living quarters.
 
Ha wait so just because your grandpa races makes all old people good at driving? There exceptions to almost every rule, but i'd say most old people suck at driving, if you deny that then you haven't been driving long enough to see some of the crap I have seen old people do on regular basis.
 
If you think you're a good driver, there are always a lot of humbling experiences waiting for you on the roads.

Even with a lot of experience on an oil track and a pretty good feel for slippery survival, the first time you hit that mirror patch of mirror ice going 100km/h or feel your car aquaplaning and lose all possible control even for a second - it gets to you.
 
His "rule" stated all old people are bad drivers. I have seen a lot of stupidity on the road and the majority of it isnt old people. Not saying theyre all good, but saying every driver over the age of 60 is sketchy is dumb.
 
This is an entertaining thread.

I think everybody should drive a manual (or know how) because people tend to pay more attention on the road. That said, if you want to drive an auto or your car didn't have the option then whatever man.

But if you're going to put time into modifying your car, then you should care about/like driving enough to have a manual.

On the note of the thread topic, I think actions speak louder than anything else. You really don't know how good you are behind a wheel until you get put into a position where you're really tested. I've done stupid shit when I was 16/17 in my first truck and I definitely learned from it. I love driving everything from my Toyota to dad's Subaru to the bulldozer at work. and won't ever give it up.
 


And being able to navigate through traffic at high speeds does not make you a good driver. That lesson is learned at age 18/19
 
as far as actual driving/racing goes, ken block is actually pretty terrible.

Sure he's good at gymkhana, but he gets his ass kicked routinely in rallying...y'know, the actual even he competes in.

of course that's been a fair description of just about every racer since loeb came around.
 
I don't HAVE to dipshit I just choose to when ascending a 15% grade with multiple stops in heavy downtown traffic. Why would I risk rolling back a little bit into the automatic driving dumbfuck who didn't pay attention in driving school who parked their ass 3 inches behind my bumper when I can simply hold the e-brake up until I the clutch starts to catch? Get off your "proper driving" high horse, I'm not on a race track, I can cheat a little bit if I want to.
 
I hate when people assume just because you drive an automatic that you aren't a good driver. Driving stick does not make you any better of a driver. It takes no skill to drive standard and anyone can learn it in less than an hour. There are plenty of shitty drivers who prefer to drive standard and plenty of amazing drivers who prefer to drive automatic.

that being said I think everyone should learn to drive in a standard and everyone should learn at 14-16. you can't learn to drive at 24 and expect to become a good driver.
 
I know this kid who's had his license for less than a year and he thinks he's the best driver ever and he could easily drive f1 cars. He can't even shift at the right rpm and he also thinks his Celica with cut springs handles better than anything on the road.
 
, pulling the e-brake, holding on to it and releasing it while pushing in and letting out the clutch is WAYYY easier than just fucking letting the clutch out an inch and sitting there.

Keep your car from rolling backwards before anyone comes up behind you dip shit.
 
My uncle can do heel-toe on hills instead of using the e-brake and he hardly rolls back at all it's pretty cool hah.
 
The only thing you can really be better at is parallel parking, which I'm way better at than any of you guys.
