realist theorists want to develop the state's power-- measured by whatever the most contemporary metric happens to be-- relative to other states at any moral cost.
That means economically, if economics define power at the given time, the state will want to develop its economy past its neighbors.
Domestically, the state will want to strengthen its power by establishing not only defense but infrastructure as well if relevant.
Globally, a realist theorist would view gaining hegemony as the states ultimate goal and will do as necessary to achieve that.
