I want to make a ski edit

Hey Newschoolers,

So I want to go out and get some clips this season with the goal of making like a 3-5 min edit of my skiing, but I haven't filmed anything in years. I used to skateboard a lot back when the VX1000 was king for follow cam/fish eye shots and I liked that look a lot. Something with higher res would also be cool for short b-roll clips and other kinds of shots though too. What kind of handheld cameras are you guys into these days? What editing softwares do you like?

While I'm certainly not the sickest skier on here I have tremendous passion for it right now, enough to try to make the best edit I can anyway. I'll be staying in Truckee again and it would be sick af meet up with some other local riders and hook it up with some clips too. I'm 30 with a full-time job and most of my homies aren't down to hit street spots anymore, but I'm down to go after urban and park clips whatever works. Stoked to give it my all and see what comes out of it

The hype cameras in skiing rn are kinda following the hype stuff in skating. Servo zoom, 720 60p camcorders (Panasonic HVX200, Panasonic HMC150, etc.) that are compatible with thread on fisheyes and have a body build like the VX1000 except slightly bigger and heavier. Lots of the big crews are transitioning to similar camcorders except 1080 and 4K compatible ones though after running the 720 ones for the past number of years.

I think anything with servo zoom, a filter thread for a fisheye, and the ability to turn on and off your stabilizer will do you well. There are some cheap dad cams out there that are kinda small but have crazy good video quality.

If you’re not that stoked on your skiing, don’t expect others to be just cause you got dope camera gear.

you’re probably humble and actually sick, either way, you don’t need to drop any cash on camera stuff if you have a decent phone. Can accomplish almost anything in post production, CapCut app on your phone is great for editing. DaVinci Resolve for a computer editing program.

I actually appreciate the feedback. I'm definitely not looking to throw down on a pro camera setup haha but something perhaps slightly better than a phone but still reasonable seems fun and doable. I'll check out those apps for sure

Don't get me wrong I am stoked on my skiing I'm just not throwing dub corks or pretz 6 out of every rail

Word! Ye I’m all about super clean basic tricks, old dogs gonna break if we go for a DP (dub cork) when we should be goin for a kiss on the cheek (cork 3 with or without a grab)

Dont worry about the tools so much, just have fun skiing and land your shit lol. GoPro or equivalent for POV and follow cam is priceless tho

Based on what people are saying I'm kinda leaning toward it ngl...twat :)

-Cheap used especially older models

-Good stabilisation as long as you go for hero 7 black or above

-No crazy zoom but you can change up the FoV (fisheye vs wide vs narrow) on the fly and mix up follow, pan, and static shots to produce a visually interesting edit

-Protune + cheap amazon NDs and you can shoot at a 180° shutter

-borderline indestructable for a camera

-fits in your pocket when you're not filming

I get that POV shots in general became way overused but idk why gopros get so much hate tbh
