I think i blew a head gasket in my subaru

or maybe its the muffler. Basically, I was going along, and put it into gear, and suddenly, the engine got really, really loud, and it was sputtering and shaking and all sorts of bad stuff. Its a 98 Legacy GT sedan, with the 2.5 swaped out for a 2.2(which is much more reliable ive been lead to believe). What do you think it could be and how much do you think its gonna cost? I'm scared.

Is the engine like shaking violently in the engine bay causing the hood to noticably rattle when you drive? Because if so it could just be a broken engine mount which is a really cheap fix.

Dont be scared pussy. buy a manual. put it on jackstands. and de-engine that bitch.

all you need is a wrench some ducktape and loctite

man i know how you feel, my '95 jeep busts like that about once a month.

dunno about your subaru but hopefully its not a big deal (yn)

check and see if you have milky oil, if you blew the head gasket their would be anti freeze in your oil making it milky.

i have a 95 legacy wagon with the 2.2 and i burned a valve last fall and it was super rough idling. but i don't think it was any louder. do you still have power to pull hils?

If it rattles really bad when you step on the gas you might have a rod-bearing problem. I would get it checked out by a subaru DEALERSHIP as soon as possible. You don't want to spin one of those and shove a rod through your engine. that can get expensive(new shortblock).

the engine got loud? as in the RPMS went higher on their own? explain in detail whats not normal. that was the most vague explanation ever.

as stated above, check your oil by pulling the dipstick out. if its milky (has antifreeze in the oil) then you blew the gasket. if not its something else. blowing a head gasket isnt bad if you catch it early, really easy to fix

so its the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter that failed. Its gonna be like 150 for the part. not bad i guess.

I would never get a used cat, but yes everything after the catalytic converter you can probably find cheap in a junkyard or in a subaru forum. Or is part of it your O2 sensor?

im by no means a professional mechanc, but i do toy around with some cars. check your oil. it takes three seconds. or open up your cold radiator & resevoir and see if you've got any antifreeze. this exact same thing happened to one of my vehicles a couple of months ago. tow it to a shop so you don't fuck anything else up.
