So I need help choosing a camera, I would like to spend between $1000 and $1200. I am looking for one that takes still photography as well as video. I will be using it to film skiing and take pictures for my own enjoyment. My current camera is a cannon hv40. But i want something with a higher quality. I usually work in final cut pro and I will be uploading to my macbook pro with OSX Lion so it needs to work with these programs.

If someone could guide me to what type of camera I should get that would be great thanks.

Well, the only video camera you're going to be able to buy that takes decent photos too is a dslr. at 1000-1200 your pushing the lower limit...

You could get a referb t2i body for 550, then a tamron 17-50 for 350 and a 50mm 1.8 for 100 then do you have a tripod pod? if not that would be your next purchase for like 200-300 then if you want to do follow cams you'll want a glidecam which is another 250, but if you can afford it just a handle would work okay if you have a steady arm. Here, you're looking at about 1500 and your kit isn't even close to being finished, but you could save up to buy a 70-200 for 600 bucks then 400 for a 10-20. So, if you think youre ready you could dive into this setup, but its not gonna be easy at first.

The HV40 is a nice camera right? A year ago or so everybody was all over it and I've seen a lot of nice edits from it. What's wrong with it now?

thanks i will look into the t2i and all of the accessories.

and there is nothing wrong with the hv40 i have always wanted to get into photography and now i have the money to buy a new camera so i will.
