ok, so i have a 320gig external HD and theres only 1.8 gigs left on it, so i need somthing bigger! im looking for at least 500 gig, maybe 750, maybe 1TB. i was looking as some, and i have a few differnt brangs, some that i havent heard of, here they are, wester digital (500 gig, $120 1 year warr), maxtor (500gig $100 5 year warr.) titanium II (500 gig, $120) western digital (750 gig $180) seagate agent (750 gig, $180) lacie (500 gig $170)

what do you think?

theres a western digital i was looking at 1TB for $230, but i really dont need 1 TB, 500gigs would be fine, and 750 would be plenty too

before you buy anything make sure it has a cooling system. I almost bought a 1TB hard drive for $300 that didnt cool itself. that would have been a big mistake. Try transfering 320 gigs of memory without it being able to cook eggs

i have a wd passport. dont get that. love the hard drive. it just uses too much power and my computer disconnects it. so make sure to get one with an external power source or you have to get an extra cord to make it work right...i learned that the hard way.

i have a 250 wd passport, a 120 HD thats realy my moms, and a TB Western digital something something (forgot name). good stuff. do they have costco where you live? because thats where i get mine, at MAD prices. shits practically a give away

Probably should make sure its at least firewire 400 too if you're editing footage from it. Also, keep in mind lacies only have 6 pin to 6 pin connections (i think) which would be only macs, once again i think. Someone correct me if i am wrong, because i am not sure.

hey i just thought i would throw this out there...i just got an email from wd...and it is a coupon for $20 off $75 or more...so if you were gonna mineaswell get $20 off!

the code is CUSTJUN

its good till june 18th....

Whatever you get, don't get those MyBook ones you see for cheap prices at best buy. 3 of my friends bought them and lost almost all their footage from the season.

With that being said, I recommend you stick to:

-Lacie

-Western Digital

-Seagate

-Maxtor

I have about 1.2 TB of space on Maxtors, and they come with backup software and everything. Also, always make sure it has at least a firewire 400 port, because tranferring a shitload of footage sucks when you are stuck with USB.

good call on the western digital, I've got a maxtor one and its noisy as hell. can't have it sitting on my desk cause its too annoying it has to go on the floor behind my desk. I'll prob get a 500gb wd in a few months when I have money

Let me be the first to say...from my experience...

Do not buy Lacie or Maxtor.

Buy G Technology. They make the most rock solid hard drives. So dope.

Remember you also pay for speed, if you are going to be running a ton of stuff off of it like movies and such, get a 7200rpm drive. If you just need space you can get a slower speed.

I use western digital and I haven't had any problems, I have three of them for photography.

Oh yeah also, someone mentioned Fire Wire. If your computer has a firewire port, go for that option. Its faster than USB 2.0
