im lookin for a fixed gear bike that is pretty rad. i dont want any of the new bike frames. i want it to be an old frame.. and steezy of course. if u gots one just hit me up

just a peice of advice. you can buy a new fixie online for cheaper than if you build one. if you build one itll take at least 100 for the frame, 50 for the rims and tires, 30 for the handle bars, 30 for the seat, and 50 for the crank and chain and cages and all that shit. and thats at the very least. and it would all be used. on the internet like at bikesdirect.com you can buy yourself a really nice good looking one for the same price if not cheaper and a warranty.
 
convert your own = legit summer project... and you can fix it when it breaks.....

or hit up craigslist. there is always people selling the ones they converted themselves.
 
what the fuck, dont go buy an old roadie and convert it. the front chainring wont match up with the cog. you will lose your chain all the time. its one of the most jackass things to do. you want to look for a track frame. make sure its the right size, you'll look like a jackass trying to ride a bike thats too small for you, even if you think it looks cool.

i will explain something to you, a hipster is someone who buys a fixed and knows nothing about cycling. a cyclist rides a fixed because its fun and because hipsters drained the life out of something that was once good and whole.

even mountainbikers would know not to convert road to fixed.
 
I like you. i know a bunch of kids around here who in the past year have bought a bike, tossed deep Vs on it, and now think they are the hot shit and know everything about biking, going so far as to make fun of me for riding a geared bike. Mind you, I have a great fixed gear and an awesome track bike as well. but I actually enjoy biking, I'm not in it to look hip.
 
definitely don't try converting an old road bike. my brother tried that and after a couple of months the frame was bent and useless. he hadn't been trying anything beyond hopping off curbs and doing wheelies. You need something stronger and make sure it has straight forks, I agree that a track bike is probably the way to go.
 
agreed. there are so many kids at my school who take a shitty bike give it a shitty paint job and put some shitty parts on it and then think they are badass.
i ride a fixie and they are fun and a great way to get around. but i hate the elitist hipsters who think that they are better than everyone for owning one even though they don't know shit about bikes.
but i hope that this trend blows over soon so that i can continue to ride my bike without being associated with all of the trendwhores that go along with it.
 
all you have to do is move some spacers around on the axle and re-dish the wheel. and make a suicide hub.

I've got a perfectly straight chainline, and have spent a grand total of $50 on my bike. I can't think of a better use for an old road bike.
 
I used to ride a fixed gear for a few years, now I mostly ride my Cafe Motorcycle. But from my experience I prefer riding conversions over track bikes. Mostly because road bikes have that bigger wheel base and no toe overlap, so its a much more comfortable ride and much more stable. Riding track bikes off the track sorta sucked for me because they were really twitchy, unstable, uncomfortable for long rides, and you had to pay attention to the toe overlap.

And on chainlines ultimately your never gonna get as straight of a chainline from a conversion as you would a track bike, but keeping your chain on your conversion is pretty easy too. Like I've said I used to ride my conversion for years and I only jumped the chain maybe twice, both times because i had just re-lubed the drive-train and i didn't tightened shit down enough. If you just learn how to skid right and make sure everything is gonig to be as straight and tight as you can a coversion works just fine, and in my opinion better than a track bike, atleast for riding in the city.

And to the author of the thread: if you're looking for the best deal buying a pre-made bike is the easiest and possibly cheapest for a decent bike. But i strongly suggest that you part one together and learn how to build bikes so you can fix your own when the time comes, plus its a lot of fun to build them.
 
yeah but this kid most likely lacks the know how to make a suicide. maybe its just me, but i like my road bikes roadie and i like my fixed gears tracky. this being said, i admit i DO own a Colnago roadie conversion. its one of my favorite bikes to ride honestly. i was just kinda pissed off at the potential jackassery that i saw coming.

you have no idea how tired i am of seeing beautiful old road frames converted with zero mechanical skill whatsoever clicking and groaning in pain as its merciless rider makes backwards circles around a mess bag.

Single speeds are better anyway. At least you can brake and coast. It's actually decent if you want to get anywhere and need a road to get there. lol. Try back-pedalling in traffic. You'll end up in someone's car through the back windsheild with your goddamn knit-Coal beanie so far up your ass you'll be hearing Animal Collective all the way to the hospital.

pretty sure he means back pedaling as is applying backwards pressure to the pedals to slow the bike down. skidding is the way to stop.

check out like masi bikes or something, like $300 for a fixie with flip flop hub
 
if you sped that little money you will end up with a shitty bike, if your gonna build on spend the money and do it right with nice parts that will last
 
skidding is the way to go through $100 of tires every 2 weeks. plus it doesnt slow you down whatsoever. applying back pressure will be much more efficient
 
usually when i get new tires i buy 10-30 dollar ones and they last a lot longer than 2 weeks. just don't do it excessively.
and it does slow you down pretty well. it's just all about having technique
 
that's the idea. my goal is to find a 10-40 dollar old road bike and build it. i'm not functionally retarded, my mtn bike is a 2005 kona with almost all custom parts, all of which i have installed myself. also i really like the idea of finding all the parts and putting it together

1. i plan to have brakes on it2. there is a chance i will end up with a flip flop hub, as my brother wants help build it and he seems to be more of a fan of single speeds3. i'm not trying to argue that fixies are the most efficient transportation around cities. i have a car, a mtn bike, a 10-speed, and a longboard. this is purely for fun.4. solid coal and animal collective references, i lol'd
